Getting started with automating application deployment

This topic describes the installation and configuration tasks required for the use case.

Before you install

Task

Description and reference

Ensure that your SCM system complies with the requirements.

One of the BMC Atrium Orchestrator processes employed by the ARA Workflow Job is responsible for running an NSH script (referred to as the SCM script) that accesses your SCM system and copies the relevant Java EE application files from it.
To enable this process, ensure that the SCM system complies with the following requirements:

  • The SCM client must be compatible with Cygwin.
  • BMC BladeLogic Network Shell must be installed on the same computer with the SCM client.
  • The user defined in your SCM script has authorization to access the SCM system.

Verify that your Java EE application server is supported.

Deployment of Java EE applications by the ARA Workflow Job is currently supported for IBM WebSphere and Oracle WebLogic application servers. For the full list of supported versions of these Java EE application servers, see the BMC BladeLogic Application Release Automation Getting Started Guide.

Obtain the ARA Workflow Job kit.

Obtain the ARA Workflow Job kit from BMC Software. This kit, a zipped directory named ARA-Project-Sample.zip, contains the ARA Project module that you must import into BMC Atrium Orchestrator to enable the creation of ARA Workflow Jobs, as well as other associated files. For information about the contents of the kit, see Contents-of-ARA-Workflow-Job-kit.

Description and reference

Step 1. Activate required adapters.

BMC Atrium Orchestrator

Install, activate, and configure the following BMC Atrium Orchestrator adapters:

  • FileAdapter
  • CommandLineAdapter
  • BladeLogic Adapter

If you have these adapters under different, non-default names, you must define them for BMC Atrium Orchestrator to recognize them. For the BladeLogic Adapter, you must have the Network Shell and an RSCD Agent installed on the BMC Atrium Orchestrator host computer.
For further information about adapters, see the user guides for BMC Atrium Orchestrator adapters, especially the BMC Atrium Orchestrator Application Adapter User Guide for BMC BladeLogic Server Automation.

Step 2. Activate required modules.

BMC Atrium Orchestrator

Install and activate the following BMC Atrium Orchestrator modules:

  • Auto-Pilot-OA-File_Utilities
  • Auto-Pilot-OA-Common_Utilities
  • Auto-Pilot-AD-Utilities
  • BMC-BladeLogic-AD-Operation_Manager

Step 3. Configure the connection between BMC BladeLogic Server Automation
and BMC Atrium Orchestrator.

BMC BladeLogic Server Automation

Through the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation console, you must add the configuration information required to connect to BMC Atrium Orchestrator.

For more information, see "Setting up the connection to the BMC Atrium Orchestrator" in the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation User Guide.

Step 4. Perform post-installation tasks for Java EE application management.

BMC BladeLogic Application Release Automation

Perform the post-installation tasks for setting up the management of Java EE applications through the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation console.
For further details and instructions, see the BMC BladeLogic Application Release Automation Getting Started Guide.

Step 5. Import the ARA Project module file to BMC Atrium Orchestrator.

BMC Atrium Orchestrator

To import the ARA Project module to BMC Atrium Orchestrator, you can either use the Development Studio component of the BMC Atrium Orchestrator solution or run a command line that invokes the BMC Atrium Orchestrator Installer Platform Utilities and performs the import. For more information, see Importing-the-ARA-Project-module.

Step 6. Select the ARA Project module for use in Workflow Jobs.

BMC BladeLogic Server Automation

After importing the ARA Project module into BMC Atrium Orchestrator, you must perform an initial selection of the ARA Project module through the BMC BladeLogic Console, so that the processes that it contains are available for any ARA Workflow Job that you subsequently create. To perform this task, your role must be granted the WorkflowJob.Configure authorization. To select the module, perform the following steps:

  1. Through the BMC BladeLogic Console, select Configuration > Workflow Job Configuration.
  2. From the list of active BMC Atrium Orchestrator modules on the Workflow Job Configuration dialog box, select the ARA Project module, ARA2_Project, and then click OK.
