Application Release Management use case

The goals of the Application Release Management use case are:

  • Application modeling
  • Packaging and promotion
  • Deployment and rollback
  • Policy-driven application deployment

The Application Release Management capability is a superset of the Software Distribution capability. Beyond software distribution, a BMC Server Automation (BSA) operator can further configure applications and, using BMC Application Automation (BAA), can configure enterprise middleware applications.

Application Release Management can be accomplished by three additional and related use cases that can be performed at different times or consecutively.

  1. The BMC Server Automation operator uses the BMC Server Automation Console to define a BMC Server Automation package containing details of the application being deployed or modified.
  2. The BMC Server Automation operator schedules a job to deploy the package on a managed server. The package contains details of application configuration.
  3. The BMC Server Automation operator can further configure enterprise middleware applications through the use of BMC Application Automation. As in step 2, BMC Server Automation copies the application information to the managed server, and BMC Application Automation deploys the application.

Through the use of BladeLogic Server Automation smart groups, software distribution can be controlled based on the business-level policies to which servers comply.
