Understanding the impact of changing the Auto Group option


When an auto-group parameter is changed in a dynamic field, TrueSight Network Automation takes these actions:

  • When the auto-grouping parameter is a text-type parameter, TrueSight Network Automation takes the user's input and strips off leading and trailing white space and collapses other white space down to a single blank.
  • For an existing device, the TrueSight Network Automation system removes the device from the auto-group corresponding to the parameter's old value. If the auto-group becomes empty and the group is not referenced by any other system components, TrueSight Network Automation deletes the auto-group and logs an event to the Event Log. Otherwise, TrueSight Network Automation logs an event and displays a prompt to remind the user to manually dereference and delete the auto-group, as appropriate.
  • If the new value is empty, then TrueSight Network Automation does not assign the device to any auto-group for this parameter.
  • When the new value is not blank, TrueSight Network Automation looks for an existing auto-group corresponding to the parameter's new value. The lookup is case-insensitive. If an auto-group exists, TrueSight Network Automation adds the device to this auto-group.
  • If the value has no corresponding auto-group yet, TrueSight Network Automation creates a new auto-group. Its name is the parameter's label and the parameter's value (that is, Name.Value). TrueSight Network Automation adds the device to this new auto-group.
  • TrueSight Network Automation makes entries to the Event Log when creating and deleting auto-groups and when adding and removing devices to/from auto-groups.
  • If an auto grouped CAP query is changed, the old auto groups are deleted. Fields are assigned values and auto groups are created for each device during the next snapshot or during a Refresh Device Status span action.
