Defining a configuration item

In decomposing your business services, you have identified the basic building blocks of a service model – its assets or components. In the BMC service model, each individual resource is represented by a component or a CI.

A CI is created as a single instance of a class type that is defined in the BMC Atrium CMDB. Classes might identify physical components such as servers or databases, and logical components such as user groups. CIs are created through BMC Impact Model Designer.

The order in which you create related physical components is immaterial. You can create an IT system component before or after creating an application component that runs on it.
