Configuring the monitoring of VMware vSphere


 With VMware vSphere as the selected monitor type, the Add Monitor Types dialog box enables you to configure details for connecting to the vCenter / ESX servers. For more information, see Configuring-monitoring-settings.

Instructions

Collection Mode

Select one of the following collection modes, for which to monitor attributes:

  • Enterprise (default)
  • Cloud Lifecycle Management

Host Name

Type the host name or IP address of the vCenter / ESX server to which you want to connect

Port Number

Type the port number for the vCenter / ESX server. (default: 443)

By default, the vCenter port number appears in the Port Number box. Do not modify the
default port number, unless the port number that you are using for the vCenter / ESX server is different
from the default.  

vCenter/ESX Credentials

User Name

Type the user name required to connect to the vCenter / ESX server.

Password

Type the password required to connect to the vCenter / ESX server.

Confirm Password

Re-type the password.

Device Hostname lookup order

Select one of the following to define the lookup order for the host name of the device:

  • DNSNAME (default)
  • DNSNAME,VMNAME
  • VMNAME

Object Filtering Details

Datacenter Name

Type the name or the regular expression to filter datacenters that you want to include or exclude from inventory.

Cluster Name

Type the cluster name or the regular expression to filter clusters that you want to include or exclude from inventory.

Host Name

Type the host name or the regular expression to filter hosts that you want to include or exclude from inventory.

VM Name

Type the VM (virtual machine) name or the regular expression to filter VMs that you want to include or exclude from inventory.

VM DNS Name

Type the DNS name or the regular expression to filter VMs according to their DNS names to include or exclude from inventory.

VM IP Address

Type the IP address (of the VM) or the regular expression to filter VMs according to their IP addresses to include or exclude from inventory.

Exclude SCSI Devices

Select this check box to exclude SCSI devices from monitoring.

By default, SCSI devices are included for monitoring.

Exclude VM Templates

By default, this check box is already selected and VM templates are excluded from monitoring.

Clear this check box to include VM templates for monitoring.

Event Monitoring Configuration

Event Filtering Details

Click this to expand and see the options available for event filtering.

Filter Name

Type a name to identify the event filter on the BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration Console.

Filter Description

Type some significant information that you would like to store about the filter that you want to create.

Managed Object Name

Type the name of the managed object for which you want to monitor events.

Managed Object Type

Select one of the following types of managed objects from the list, for which you want to monitor events:

  • Datacenter
  • HostSystem
  • VirtualMachine
  • ClusterComputeResource
  • ResourcePool
  • Datastore
  • Folder
  • Other Type
    If you choose any one of the preceding options (except Other Type), then you must specify the name of the Managed Object as it appears in the vCenter, in the Managed Object Name field.

    If you choose Other Type from the preceding options, then you must specify the type and ID of the Managed Object in the format, ManagedObjectID|ManagedObjectType in the Managed Object Name field. You can find the managed object type and ID in the vCenter’s Managed Object browser.

    For example: To create a filter for a network object with the managed object ID as network-19, enter network-19|Network in the Managed Object Name field.

Monitor Events of Child Entities of this Object

Select this check box if you want to monitor events for all the child objects of the specified managed object.

Event Severity

Select one or more of the following options displayed, to monitor events according to event severity (for the previously specified managed object):

  • Information
  • Warning
  • Error
  • User

Event Types

Type a comma separated list of event types (VMware event data objects) that you want to monitor for the previously specified managed object.

It is not mandatory to specify a list of event types. If you do not specify an event type, all event types are monitored by default.

Examples of event types: VmConnectedEvent, VmPoweredOffEvent, VmPoweredOnEvent, and DrsVmMigratedEvent.

Event Users

Type a comma separated list of users for whom you want to monitor events (generated for the previously specified managed object).

It is not mandatory to specify a list of users. If you do not specify a user, events for all the users are monitored by default.

Monitor System Generated Events

Select this check box if you want to monitor system generated events along with user generated events for the previously specified managed object.

List - Event Filtering Details

Displays a list of already configured event filters.

Add to List

Click this option to add the event filter under the list of event filters created.

Modify Selection

Select one of the previously created filters appearing under List - Event Filtering Details and then click this option to modify the same. Here you can modify one or more of the the event filtering options available (except the filter name).

Remove from List

Click this option to remove the event filter from the list displayed under List - Event Filtering Details.
This option is only available when you select one of the existing filters under List - Event Filtering Details and click Modify Selection or Remove from List.

List - vCenter / ESX server Details

Displays a list of already configured vCenters / ESX servers.

Add to List

Click this option to add the vCenter / ESX server to the list of monitored vCenters / ESX servers.

This option appears right at the bottom of the Add Monitor Types dialog box and pertains to adding vCenters / ESX servers for monitoring.

Modify Selection

Click this option to save the changes you made in the configuration details for the selected vCenter / ESX server. After doing this, click Update to reflect your changes under the list of Defined Monitor Types and Attributes on the Monitor Configuration tab.

This option is only available when you select an existing policy and click Edit on the Monitor Configuration tab.

This option appears right at the bottom of the Add Monitor Types dialog box and pertains to modifying vCenters / ESX servers configured for monitoring.

Remove from List

Click this option to remove the vCenter / ESX server from the list of monitored vCenters / ESX servers.

This option is only available when you select an existing policy and click Edit or Delete on the Monitor Configuration tab.

This option appears right at the bottom of the Add Monitor Types dialog box and pertains to deleting already configured vCenters / ESX.

Add

Click this option to add the monitor type under the list of Defined Monitor Types and Attributes on the Monitor Configuration tab.

Close

Click this option to close the Add Monitor Types dialog box without saving any changes.

Reset

Click this option to clear off your configuration and revert to default settings.
