Features of Monitor Server KM

The Monitor Server KM component of BMC ProactiveNet Sybase Database Monitoring contains the knowledge that PATROL uses to monitor, analyze, and manage the activities of the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise Monitor Server (Monitor Server). The Monitor Server KM provides a convenient and logical user interface that you can use to monitor the performance of Adaptive Server. The Monitor Server KM runs in conjunction with the ASE KM.

The Monitor Server KM incorporates statistics that are gathered by the Monitor Server and stored in the Sybase SQL Monitor Client Library. Using the Monitor Server KM, you can:

  • monitor the Adaptive Server network I/O, procedure cache, transaction activity, data cache, CPU, device I/O, and process statistics
  • monitor the stored procedures that are currently running
  • monitor the up and down status of the Monitor Server
  • monitor the Monitor Server error log
  • send parameter warning and alarm data to PATROL Event Manager (PEM), where the data becomes the events that are then managed by PEM
  • retrieve historical parameter data stored by PEM
  • display information (annotation) specific to a data point on a graph
  • set certain periods of time (blackout periods) when parameters do not go into a warning or an alarm state even if their values cross the alarm thresholds
  • display predefined parameter charts that measure key resources
  • create and change custom parameter charts
  • monitor Sybase Monitor Servers on computers not running a PATROL Agent (however, some monitoring features are unavailable using this method)

Remote monitoring of a Monitor Server

You can use the Monitor Server KM to monitor a remote Monitor Server. A remote Monitor Server is one that resides on a server that does not have a PATROL Agent installed and running on it. The remote Monitor Server can operate on a hardware platform or operating system that is not supported by the PATROL Agent.

A Monitor Server that has a PATROL Agent installed and running on it monitors the remote Monitor Server. The Monitor Server with the PATROL Agent communicates with the remote Monitor Server via an isql connection.

To monitor a remote Monitor Server, the environment must include the following
 conditions:

  • The remote Monitor Server must belong to an ASE that is also monitored.
  • The Sybase Client software must be installed and running on the Adaptive Server.
  • The monitored Monitor Server must reside on UNIX and must list in its interfaces file the remote Monitor Server and the Adaptive Server (PATROL for Sybase cannot monitor a remote Monitor Server from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows).

You cannot access and monitor the Monitor Server error logs when you monitor a remote Monitor Server.
