Step 1: Preparing for upgrade

The following sections describe the prerequisites that you must perform before you upgrade from the existing version of BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Reporting to version 9.5.0.2:

General prerequisites and recommendations

The following are the general prerequisites and recommendations to help you in a seamless and smooth upgrade:

  • Back up the installation directory of Report Engine.
  • Upgrade the operating system to the supported version. Review the System-requirements.
  • Upgrade any Oracle database version to Oracle 11.2.0.2.0 Enterprise edition with Partitioning option or Oracle 11.2.0.2.0 Standard edition.

    Warning

    Note

Oracle partitioning enhances the manageability, performance, and availability of data. Partitioning allows tables, indexes, and index-organized tables to be subdivided into smaller pieces, enabling these database objects to be managed and accessed at a finer level of granularity.

  • Back up the database. If you use Oracle database as the database, you must back up the Oracle database schema. It allows you to restore the database without any loss of data if the upgrade fails.
  • Ensure that you have sufficient disk space and free space in tablespaces to store the database.
  • Back up the universe and reports (including custom reports).
  • Delete the BPPM_DataMart.lcmbiar file from Central Management Console – Promotion Management if you are upgrading from versions 9.5.00 or 9.5.01 of BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Reporting.
  • To perform an upgrade, you should be an advanced user with good technical understanding and expertise in using the product. To perform the upgrade, BMC recommends that you are an experienced administrator/user with the following skills:
    • Knowledge of the various components
    • Knowledge of network connectivity and communication protocols
    • Experience as an Oracle administrator, depending on the database you use
  • If you are using BMC ProactiveNet version prior to 9.0.00, you must upgrade to BMC ProactiveNet 9.0.00 or later to use BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Reporting. For more information, see the BMC ProactiveNet Upgrade Guide and Upgrading.

Backing up custom reports

You can also back up any specific reports before upgrading to the new universe, if not done earlier. This helps when you have created any custom reports. When you take backup of these reports, it becomes easy to retrieve them to the new universe.

To back up any specific report

  1. From the Start menu, select Programs > BusinessObjects XI 4.0 > BusinessObjects Enterprise > BusinessObjects Enterprise Java InfoView.
  2. On the Log On to InfoView page, in the User name and Password boxes, enter your logon credentials, and click Log On.
  3. On the InfoView home page, in the toolbar, click Document List.
  4. Expand Public Folders > BPPM Folders, and select the appropriate folders or reports that you want to take backup.
  5. On the toolbar, click Organize > Copy.
  6. On the left pane, select the My Favorites folder, and on the toolbar, click Organize > Paste.

After importing the new universe, you can paste these reports to the respective folders of the new universe.

Creating table spaces and user on Oracle database

Before upgrading, you need to update table spaces and user for the report engine database using the create_BPPMR_user_tablespaces.sql script. For information about creating table spaces and user, see Creating-table-spaces-and-user-on-Oracle-database.

Warning

Note

You must execute the create_BPPMR_user_tablespaces.sql script before upgrade. It creates a new read-only database user and new tablespaces.

Creating database and user on SQL Server

Before upgrading from Reporting Engine 9.5.01, you need to update the database and user for the report engine database using the create_sql_user.bat script. For information about creating database and user, see Creating-database-and-user-on-SQL-Server.

Warning

Note

You must execute the create_sql_user.bat script before upgrade. It creates new database user and new filegroups.
