BMC Network Automation 8.9.01 provides the following enhancements:

Tip

For information about issues corrected in this release, see Known-and-corrected-issues.

Standalone BMC Network Automation updates

The following table describes the standalone BMC Network Automation system updates included in this release:

Update

Description

Device and device adapter enhancements

Support for new OS versions and span actions for Alcatel OmniSwitch 6860E-24

The Alcatel OmniSwitch 6600/7700/7800/8800 device adapter includes the following enhancements for the Alcatel OmniSwitch 6860E-24 device:

  • Support for Alcatel AOS version 8.x
  • Support for the Deploy OS Image and Snapshot OS Image span actions
Note: While adding a Deploy OS Image span action, you need to select the Ignore Uncommitted Changes and Reboot option.

 Rule enhancements

Rule filter updates

You can filter rules based on the following criteria:

  • Include rules which cannot be corrected
  • Include rules that are correctable via the Deploy to Active span action
  • Include rules that are correctable via the Deploy to Stored span action
  • Include rules that are correctable via the Remediate span action

OS version selection in rules

When adding or editing a rule, you can specify the operating system versions to which the rule applies by entering a list of regular expressions that match the version string. You can use either the current OS version selection method (a range of operating system versions delimited by a minimum and a maximum release) or the new OS version selection method (a list of patterns).

When generating a rule from a security vulnerability, the applicable OS versions are now populated into the applicable OS version patterns (instead of into the subject). This allows you to refine the subject of the rule to specify configuration command syntax while still applying the rule to the right OS versions.

Platform support

New operating system support

BMC Network Automation supports Microsoft Windows Server 2016. For the complete operating system support information, see  OS support .

New database support

BMC Network Automation supports Microsoft SQL Server 2016 and PostgreSQL 9.5.5. For the complete database support information, see Database support .

Third-party software support

This version of BMC Network Automation is bundled with the following third-party software:

  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.8.0 update 121
  • Apache Tomcat web server version 8.0.41

Reporting enhancements

New Hide Header and Footer option for the CSV format

While exporting and emailing the following reports in CSV format, you can choose whether you want to hide header and footer:

  • ACL Search report
  • Compliance Summary report
  • Configuration Search report
  • Device Adapter Capabilities report
  • Device Inventory report
  • Discrepancy Summary report
  • OS Image History report

Comparison of custom trails through external URL in the Configuration Comparison report

You can now compare custom trails through the  Configuration Comparison report URL.

Additional details in the Compliance Summary report

You can choose to include a new column, Base Score (of a security vulnerability) in the Compliance Summary report. In addition, the report shows a new link, View Security Vulnerability, in the Actions column if a rule has any associated vulnerability. You can click this link to view details, such as title, CVE IDs, vendor link, and description of a security vulnerability.

The Compliance Summary report external URL includes a new field, showBaseScore, to include the base score of a security vulnerability in the report.

Performance enhancements

Functionality optimization

The following areas show improved performance:

  • Retrieving data for the following components, pages, and report:
    • Auto-groups
    • Dashboard
    • Events list page
    • Jobs list page
    • Rules list page
    • Job Details report
  • Overall performance improvement by fetching results more often from the memory rather than the database

(Applicable for Linux only) Better UI and web services performance

A new Tomcat Java Virtual Machine (JVM) option, ThreadPriorityPolicy and a new bna.connector.threadPriority property in the catalina.properties file offer better UI and web services performance.

Miscellaneous enhancements

Importing and exporting additional components from the CLI (import and export utility)

The following additional components can be imported and exported by using the import and export utility:

  • Combo groups
  • Conditions
  • Dynamic fields
  • Keywords
  • Policies
  • Roles

New Hide Header and Footer option for the CSV format

While exporting and emailing the following in CSV format, you can choose whether you want to hide header and footer:

  • Custom action captured results
  • Events list
  • Jobs
  • Predefined jobs
  • Policies
  • Send Email span action

External integration parameters moved to a separate tab

All the system parameters in the External Integrations section are moved to a separate tab, External Integrations.

Sending SNMP trap notifications based on the job state change

In addition to an email notification, you can now choose to send an SNMP trap notification to one or more SNMP manager stations based on the job state change. For more information, see Creating-a-generic-job.

New field in the external URL for the Mark As Trusted span action

The  external URL for the Mark As Trusted span action enables you to mark the current configuration as the trusted configuration through the current attribute.

BMC Network Automation web services updates

The following table describes the  BMC Network Automation web services updates included in this release:

Update

Description

RESTful API

New services based on the REST methodology are added. This is an HTTP-based protocol that carries data formatted per the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) specification and performs create, retrieve, update, and delete (CRUD) operations on selected components. In this release, CRUD is available for devices, groups, combo groups, realms, and jobs. For more information, see Using-the-REST-API.

Import and export service updates

The ImportExportService class includes the following new methods:

  • exportCombogroups() to export combo groups to an XML format
  • exportConditions() to export conditions to an XML format
  • exportDynamicTypes() to export dynamic fields to an XML format
  • exportKeywords() to export keywords to an XML format
  • exportPolicies() to export policies to an XML format
  • exportRoles() to export roles to an XML format

The importComponents() method now supports the import of the following components into the BMC Network Automation database from an XML format:

  • Combo groups
  • Conditions
  • Dynamic fields
  • Keywords
  • Policies
  • Roles

The import and export of rules has been updated to support the selection of applicable OS images via list of regular expressions using the new <osImageNamePatterns> XML element.

RuleFilter DTO updates

The RuleFilter DTO used in the getRules() method has been updated to get status of the rules to indicate whether rules are correctable.

Rule and AbbreviatedRule DTO updates

The Rule DTO and AbbreviatedRule DTO have been updated to include a new osImageNamePatterns attribute, which selects the applicable operating system images via list of regular expressions.

Deprecated methods

A few SOAP-based methods have been deprecated and replaced with new methods.

For a few deprecated SOAP-based methods, you can use the REST-based endpoints to avail the same web services. For more information about the deprecated methods, see the Deprecated tab in the Javadoc documentation.

BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management-related updates

The following table describes the BMC Network Automation updates included in this release to support BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management :

Update

Description

Support for using same VLAN and IP address range in multiple pod NIC segments

BMC Network Automation allows the same VLAN and IP address range to be used in multiple pod NIC segments. The sharing can be useful, for instance, if two different pod NIC segments each carry traffic for the same VLAN and IP address range, but connect to different port types, which could have different Quality of Service (QoS) settings.
