Device groups

The Device Groups node is, next to the device topology, another way of organizing all managed devices within your network. The structure defined through the groups is individual and freely configurable by the administrator. These groups can contain any type of device, that is, clients, relays or even the master server. Devices can also be present in more than one group, for example, a Windows 7 client may be in a group called Windows 7 Servers and at the same time in another group called Accounting Clients .

Device groups can thus be used to create extensive and comprehensive inventories, facilitate the installation of new software within the network or to simply modify a configuration setting.

Assume, for example, that you need to have all word processors point to a new set of templates, which are available on the office servers. This involves changing the word processor's .ini file or the Registry where a specific entry must be modified through an operational rule. To do this, you can use the console, select the query assigned to the group of device in question, and make the changes to the query. Click OK and CM will carry out the requested changes on all concerned groups.

The main Device Groups node has the following subnodes:

  • One node for each created device group
  • One node for every member device

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
