Enabling and configuring History Datastream

To link a BMC AMI Ops PAS to the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops component, you must configure a unique Datastream instance name that identifies the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space to which you want to connect. You can configure the Datastream instance name from the DATASTRM view.

Before you begin

Install and configure the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops component. For more information, see Installing and configuring BMC AMI Datastream for Ops.

After installing the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops component, configure and enable the History Datastream as follows:

  1. Access the DATASTRM view for a selected BMC AMI Ops PAS. For more information, see To access the DATASTRM view.
  2. Link the PAS to the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space by configuring a unique Datastream instance name for the PAS. For more information, see To configure a Datastream Instance Name
  3. Enable the Datastream Instance Name. For more information, see To enable a Datastream Instance Name.

    Warning

    Important

If other products are running in the PAS of a BMC AMI Ops product that is connected to a specific Datastream Instance Name, all the products share the same BMC AMI Datastream for Ops connection, when enabled.

To access the DATASTRM view

  1. From Plex Manager, select the PAS that you want to connect and navigate to the EZADMIN menu.
  2. From the EZADMIN menu, select the History Datastream option under History Data Sets.

The DATASTRM view has the following fields:

    Field

    Description

    Datastream Instance Name

(Required) A 16-character unique name that is assigned to BMC AMI Datastream for Ops

The Datastream instance name is used to establish a connection between the BMC AMI Ops PAS and the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops. The default Datastream Instance Name is AMI.Agent.Ops.

    Instance Number

Any value from 0 through 15This value is automatically assigned by the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space. The instance number uniquely identifies a BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space when multiple BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address spaces are running.

    Status

Displays the current connection status between the BMC AMI Ops PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops

By default, the configuration status is DISABLED.

You also have a list of common record types. By default, four record types are included in the list when you configure DATASTRM view for the first time. Enable the configuration to save these records. You can modify the default list by using the ADD and Delete commands, before issuing the ENAble command.

    Warning

    Important

By default, no connection between a BMC AMI Ops PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops is configured. Make sure that one BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space is configured for each z/OS LPAR. You can configure additional BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address spaces to balance the load across multiple PASs within an LPAR.

To configure a Datastream Instance Name

  1. On the COMMAND line, type CHAnge and press Enter.
  2. Type a unique instance name to replace the default Datastream Instance Name.
  3. On the COMMAND line, type END and press Enter to save the changes.
If you try to save a blank Datastream instance name, you get a warning message, and the END command is accepted only when you type a relevant Datastream instance name.
  4. (Optional) On the COMMAND line, type CANcel and press Enter to return to DATASTRM view without saving your changes.

To enable a Datastream Instance Name

  1. On the COMMAND line, type ENAble and press Enter to connect the BMC AMI Ops PAS to a target BMC AMI Datastream for Ops.

The screen refreshes to show the status of the connection.

    Warning

    Important

After defining an instance name to a BMC AMI Ops PAS, restart the PAS. This automatically connects the PAS to the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space.

After you execute the ENAble command:

    • If the connection is successful, the Status field value changes to ENABLED and the instance number of the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space is displayed. The instance number uniquely identifies a BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space when multiple BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address spaces are running.

    • If the connection cannot be established even after restarting the BMC AMI Ops PAS, the Status field value changes to PENDING. The BMC AMI Ops PAS attempts to reconnect to the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space periodically.

      Warning

      Important

If the number of attempts to reconnect to the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space exceeds 10, the BMC AMI Ops PAS issues an error message. The Status field value on the DATASTRM view changes to MAXRETRIES, and the Instance Number field displays the error code for the last attempt.

  2. When the status is enabled, on the COMMAND line, type END and press Enter to save the changes and return to the EZADMIN menu.
  3. (Optional) On the COMMAND line, type CANcel and press Enter to exit without saving your changes.

To disable the PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops connection

  1. On the COMMAND line, type DISable.
This temporarily disconnects the connection between BMC AMI Ops PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops.
  2. Type END and press Enter to save the changes and return to the DATASTRM view.
  3. (Optional) Type CANcel and press Enter to return without making any changes to the connection status.
Warning

Important

Whenever you make any changes to an enabled configuration, the DATASTRM view automatically disables the connection between the BMC AMI Ops PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space. This allows you to make changes to the connection instance name, the list of the enabled records, and to configure a new product in the PAS. You can also review the changes before initiating the changes to the interval recorder.

When the connection is automatically disabled, you receive a message informing you that the DATASTRM view has disabled a previously enabled connection, and that the Interval Recorder has disconnected the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops connection.

After making the required changes, you have to issue the ENABLE command to restart the connection.

To remove the PAS and BMC AMI Datastream for Ops connection

  1. On the COMMAND line, type DELete.

This action removes the local BMC AMI Ops PAS configuration, and permanently disables the connection between the PAS and the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops address space.

    Error
    Warning

The DELete command reverts the enablement and configuration parameters to the initial factory settings, and disables the BMC AMI Datastream for Ops component.

  2. Type YES to confirm the action.

The DATASTRM view closes and the display returns to its former state.

  3. (Optional) Type CANcel and press Enter to return to the DATASTRM view without making any changes.
