TrueSight Server Automation Console elements

The console contains standard GUI elements, which you can modify using the Preferences menu (Window > Preferences).

The following figure shows the console when you log on the first time. This is called the Classic perspective. The next figure is an exploded view of a Classic perspective.

In the exploded view, a server is open in the Folders view at left. You can browse the contents of the server in the content editor at right. The object title appears in a tab at the top left of the content editor. In this example, the object title is an IP address, 10.20.93.81. The tabs at the bottom of the content editor let you review different aspects of the server — Live Browse, Activity, Snapshot Results, and Audit Results. At bottom left, properties for the currently selected object automatically populate the Properties view.

The following table lists console elements and provides a brief description of each.

Console element

Description

console title bar

Identifies the system name, the user, the user's role, and the Application Server pool to which the client is connected. Contains the basic controls to minimize, maximize and close the console window.

global menu bar

Contains commands that can be executed throughout the console. If a command is unavailable in a particular context, it is dimmed. The menus and menu options are organized for quick access to frequently used commands and tasks.
The menu identifies modifiable keystroke combinations or key bindings and mnemonics (ALT + underlinedLetter) for commonly used commands and tasks. You can change the key bindings by choosing Windows > Preferences > General > Keys or pressing CTRL+Shift+L twice. For more information, see Customizing keystroke combinations.

global toolbar

Contains icons for common actions such as open, search, and close.

perspective

A perspective represents a configuration of views, view tab groups, and editors. By default, the TrueSight Server Automation Console opens to the Classic perspective. The Classic perspective contains the Folders view, the Properties view, Permissions view, and Audit Trail view tab group, the Tasks in Progress view, and a space (upper right quadrant) reserved for content editors. The name of the perspective appears at upper right on the console.
Perspectives are configured for certain tasks. For example, the Classic perspective is configured to make it easy to perform typical TrueSight Server Automation configuration and provisioning tasks. The Explorer perspective, a preconfigured perspective, is designed for navigating objects in your enterprise.
You can open additional perspectives from the drop-down list of perspectives in the Perspective title bar or by choosing Window > Open Perspective > perspectiveName. Perspective names appear on tabs at right as well as in the drop-down list of perspectives, making it easy to navigate between perspectives. You can customize existing perspectives to suit your content.
Perspectives contain menus and toolbars for navigating multiple perspectives, opening, resizing, moving, or closing perspectives, and changing the look. The system saves any customization until you click the Restore icon or choose Window > Reset Perspective.
All perspectives contain the following features. For more information, see Console perspectives and views.

  • A system menu which can be accessed when you right-click the perspective title tab.
  • Icons to minimize, maximize, send to toolbar, and close the perspective.

view

Defines a logical grouping of information, objects, and actions in the console for ease of navigation and increased productivity.
A view has a tab with the view name on it, a menu and toolbar for navigating multiple views, opening, resizing, moving, or closing a view, and changing the look.
You can move views around within the perspective and dock them in a new location, create tab groups with multiple views, and detach views from the perspective.
All views contain:

  • A system menu which can be accessed when you choose Window > Navigation > Show System Menu or when you right-click the view title tab.
  • Icons to minimize, maximize, and restore the view to its original size.
    In addition, some views have a specialty toolbar and corresponding menu (indicated by the pop-up menu icon) .

tab group

Describes two or more views that appear in a tabbed notebook format called a tab group. You can move the views together as a unit or move each view independently in the tab group.

content editor

Serves as the area of the perspective where you perform an action on an object selected from a view. The type of editor that opens in the content editor depends on the type of object or action you select from a view.
All editors contain the following features. For more information, see Content editors.

  • A tab with the object name on it.
  • A system menu which you access by choosing Window > Navigation > Show System Menu or right-clicking the content editor title tab.
  • Icons to minimize, maximize, and restore the editor to its original size and location.
    When you have multiple content editors open, they appear as named tabs in the content editor pane of the perspective.
