Downloading patch payloads to the catalog

(Microsoft Windows and Solaris) If you choose not to download the payloads at the same time as the metadata, you can download them individually or you can use the following procedure to select a group of patches and initiate download of the payload for patches that already have metadata in the patch catalog.


Use this procedure if the amount of data to download is significant and would impact performance. You can schedule the download in advance of deployment, during off-peak hours, to make more efficient use of maintenance windows.

To download selected patches to the catalog

  1. In the Depot folder, navigate to the patch catalog for which you want to download patches.
  2. Right-click the patch catalog and choose Download.
  3. Provide information for the New Patch Download Job as described in the following table:


    New Patch Download Job - General

    On the General tab, you can enter basic information about the Patch Download Job.




    Enter the name of the Download job.


    Enter a description of the Download Job.

    Save in

    Select a location where the Download Job is stored.

    Specify a Catalog

    (Read only) Displays the hierarchical location in the Folders pane where the patch catalog is stored.

    New Patch Download Job - Download Options

    This panel enables you to select patches for download. Click Add and select patches from the provided list.

    The patches on the list are those that already have metadata in the patch catalog and reflect the smart groups that have been previously defined.


    If you entered this wizard by selecting Download All Missing Patches from Analysis Results, then this step is eliminated because all patches that have metadata, but no payload, are automatically selected.

    New Patch Download Job - Default Notifications

    The Default Notifications panel provides options for defining default notifications that are generated when a job completes. If you have set up notifications for a particular scheduled job, those notifications are generated instead of default notifications.

    Default notifications can take the form of emails or SNMP traps. When a job completes, an SNMP trap is sent to a specified server, where it can be read using software that receives and interprets SNMP traps. Default notifications are sent when you run a job immediately (that is, you do not schedule the job) or a scheduled job completes but you have not set up email or SNMP notifications for that scheduled occurrence.

    Job Run Notifications


    Send email to

    Lists email addresses of the accounts to notify when a job completes with the status that you specify. Separate multiple email addresses with semicolons, such as; After entering email address information, check the statuses that cause an email to be generated. The statuses can be Success, Failed, or Aborted.

    Send SNMP trap to

    Provides name or IP address of the server to notify when the job completes. After entering server information, select the statuses that should cause an SNMP trap to be generated. The statuses can be Success, Failed, or Aborted.

    TrueSight Server Automation provides a management information base (MIB) that describes its SNMP trap structure. You can use this MIB to create scripts that integrate traps into your trap collection system. The MIB is located on the Application Server host computer at installDirectory/Share/BladeLogic.mib.

    List failed servers in email notification

    Indicates that email notifications should list all servers on which a job has failed.

    New Patch Download Job - Schedules

    The Schedules panel lets you schedule a job to execute immediately, schedule a job at a specific time in the future, schedule a job on a recurring basis, and define notifications that are issued when a job runs.

    When scheduling a job, you can perform any of the following tasks:

    • Scheduling a job that executes immediately — To schedule a job that executes immediately, select Execute job now.
    • Scheduling a job — The Schedule tab lets you schedule a job so it can run one time, recur hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly, or recur at some arbitrary interval.
      While scheduling, you can set the time zone for the job. You can also set an execution priority level for the job.


      For a recurring schedule, TrueSight Server Automation automatically accounts for differences in time zones and changes in daylight savings time. For example, if you schedule a job that should run weekly at 06:00 Eastern Standard Time, the job always runs at 06:00 Eastern Time, no matter whether standard or daylight savings time is in effect.

      Ensure that all component machines in your TrueSight Server Automation system have their clocks synchronized. 

    • Defining job notifications — The Job Notifications tab lets you set up notifications that are generated when a scheduled job runs.



To view download job results

After the patches are downloaded, you can view the results of the job run. The run date and time are displayed together with a final count of how many patches were successfully downloaded and how many failed to download. If you expand the results, individual patches are identified in Object View together with their final status.

After the patches are downloaded, you can right-click a Download Job and select Show Results.
