Installing in Standard mode

This topic explains the installation process for Track-It! by using an existing or a new database server in Standard mode. When installing Track-It in a Standard mode, you can customize the attributes. Before you begin the installation, ensure all the prerequisites are met. For more information, see Preparing for installation.

Notes

  • You can install the Track-It! application in any of the supported languages, but the installer screens are displayed only in the English language.
  • BMC Client Management is installed in the English language only.

The following topics are provided:

To perform the installation by using an existing database server

  1. As an administrator, log on to the system where you want to install Track-It!
  2. Click here to download the installer file to a preferred location.
  3. Double-click the installer to extract the installation files.
    By default, the extraction location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Track-It! <version number> Setup.
  4. On the Track-It! versionNumber Setup page, click Next.
  5. To begin the installation, in the Track-It! dialog box, click Yes.
  6. (Optional) If you want to install Track-It! in a language other than English, click the down arrow, select a language, and click Next.
  7. On the Welcome to the setup wizard for Track-It! page, click Next.
  8. On the License Agreement page, click Yes.
  9. On the Setup Type page, select Standard and click Next.

  10. On the Select Components page, select one of the following options and click Next.

    • Select both the Create a new Track-It! database and Install Application Server check boxes to install these components on the same machine.
    • Select only the Install Application Server check box to install the server on a separate machine.
    • If you select the Install Application Server check box, the Install BMC Client Management for Asset Management check box is selected by default.
  11. On the Select License File page, perform one of the following actions and click Next:

    BMC Client Management is installed on Track-It! Application Server and BMC Client Management database is installed on the database server on which Track-It! database is created.

    Track-It!
    • To upload the Track-It! license, clear the Use temporary license check box, click Browse, and select the file.
    • To use a temporary license file that is valid for 30 days, ensure that the Use temporary license check box is selected.
    BMC Client Management
    • To upload the BMC Client Management license, clear the Use temporary license for BMC Client Management check box, click Browse, and select the file.
    • To use a temporary license file that is valid for 30 days, ensure that the Use temporary license for BMC Client Management check box is selected.

    By default, BMC Client Management is installed with a trial license. After the installation, you must upload the required license file. For more information, see Applying a license file.

  12. (Optional) On the Destination Path page, to change the default Destination Folder location, click Browse, select a location, and then click Next.
    By default, the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\BMC\Track-It!
  13. On the Database Server Type page, select the Use existing SQL Server option and click Next.
  14. Based on the check boxes you select in step 10, perform the appropriate steps:

    If you selected the Create a new Track-It! database and Install Application Server check boxes
    1. On the Create New Database page, in the SQL Server Name field, enter the server name.
      You can provide the details of an existing server.
    2. In the Database Name field, enter a database name that you want to create for Track-It!
    3. To enable server to dynamically select a port, select the Dynamically determine port check box.
      By default, the port 1433 is used.
    4. (Optional) Clear the Dynamically determine port check box, in the Port Number field and enter a custom port value.
    5. In the Administration Login section, select one of the following options and click Next:
      • If you select SQL Server authentication option, in the User Name field, enter the username for the user who has the administrative permissions. You can also use the sa credentials.
      • If you select Windows Authentication option, enter your Windows account credentials.
    6. Click Next.
      Database connectivity is checked with the details provided on this page. If the connectivity fails, an appropriate message is shown or the next page is shown.
    7. On the Track-It! Admin Password page, enter and confirm a password for the Track-It! database administrator user (_SMSYSADMIN_), and click Next.
      This Track-It! database user is granted the database administrative privileges.

    If you selected the Install Application Server check box only
    1. On the Database Server Type, click Next.
      By default, the Microsoft SQL Server Database option is selected.
    2. On the SQL Server Database Information page, enter the server details:
      1. In the Server field, enter the server name.
      2. In the Database Name field, enter a database name.
      3. To enable server to dynamically select a port, select the Dynamically determine port check box.
        By default, the port 1433 is used.
      4. (Optional) If you clear the Dynamically determine port check box, in the Port Number field, enter a custom port value.
      5. Click Next.
        Database connectivity is checked with the details provided on this page. If the connectivity fails, then an appropriate message is shown or the next page is shown.
    3. On the Track-It! database admin connection credentials page, enter a username and password for the Track-It! database administrator user (_SMSYSADMIN_), and click Next.
      This Track-It! database user is granted the database administrative privileges. The installation of SQL Express begins.
  15. On the Virtual Directory Names page, perform the following actions:
    1. In the Install Track-It! on this website list, select an appropriate option.
      If you have created your own website on IIS, the website names are listed here and you can select one of them to install Track-It!.
    2. In the Technician Login URL field, enter a preferred application name, such as Track-It!
    3. In the Self Service Login URL field, enter a preferred name such as, Self Service or Help Desk.
    4. Click Next.
  16. On the Administrator User Information page, enter details about your Windows Authentication account and click Next.

    The user details that you enter must have the system administrator permissions for the server on which you are installing Track-It!
  17. On the Start Copying Files page, review your settings and click Next to start the installation process.

    The installation process might take some time.

    Note

    After Track-It! is installed successfully, you must restart your server.

  18. On the next page, make a note of your login credentials, select the I acknowledge and understand this check box and click Next.
  19. On the Thank you for choosing Track-It! page, select the URL check box to launch Track-It! and click Finish.
  20. After you login for the first time, you must change your password.

To perform the installation by using a new database server

  1. As an administrator, log on to the system where you want to install Track-It! 
  2. Click here to download the installer file to a preferred location.
  3. Double-click the installer to extract the installation files.
    By default, the extraction location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Track-It! <version number> Setup.
  4. In the Track-It! versionNumber Setup page, click Next.
  5. To begin the installation, in the Track-It! dialog box, click Yes.
  6. (Optional) If you want to install Track-It! in a language other than English, click the down arrow and select a language.
  7. On the Welcome to the setup wizard for Track-It! page, click Next.
  8. On the License Agreement page, click Yes.
  9. On the Setup Type page, select Standard and click Next.
  10. On the Select Components page, select one of the following options and click Next.

    • Select both the Create a new Track-It! database and Install Application Server check boxes to install these components on the same machine.
    • Select only the Install Application Server check box to install the server on a separate machine.  
  11. To enable IIS to run in 32-bit mode, on the confirmation page, click Yes.
  12. On the Select License File page, perform one of the following actions and click Next:

    Track-It!
    • To upload a license file, click Browse, and select a file.
    • To use a temporary license file, select the Use temporary license check box.
    BMC Client Management
    • To upload the BMC Client Management license, clear the Use temporary license for BMC Client Management check box, click Browse, and select the file.
    • To use a temporary license file that is valid for 30 days, ensure that the Use temporary license for BMC Client Management check box is selected.

    By default, BMC Client Management is installed with a trial license. After the installation, you must upload the required license file. For more information, see Applying a license file.

  13. (Optional) On the Destination Path page, to change the default Destination Folder location, click Browse, select a location, and then click Next.
    By default, the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\BMC\Track-It!
  14. On the Database Server Type page, select the Download and install Microsoft SQL Express 2012 with Advanced Services option and click Next.
    Ensure that you have a minimum of 2 GB space on your hard drive. Also, you must have an internet connection on your server to download the Microsoft SQL Express setup.
  15. After the Microsoft SQL Express server setup is downloaded, on the SQL Express Admin User password page, enter a password for your SQL Express instance, confirm the password, and click Next.
    The Microsoft SQL Express installation might take some time. The same password is used for the Track-It! database administrator user (_SMSYSADMIN_). This Track-It! database user is granted the database administrative privileges.
  16. On the Virtual Directory Names page, perform the following actions:
    1. In the Install Track-It! on this website list, select an option.
    2. In the Technician Login URL field, enter a preferred application name such as Track-It!
    3. In the Self Service Login URL field, enter a preferred name such as Self Service or Help Desk.
    4. Click Next.
  17. On the Administrator User Information page, enter details about your Windows Authentication account and click Next.
    The user details that you enter must have the system administrator permissions for the server on which you are installing Track-It!
  18. On the Start Copying Files page, review your settings and if you are satisfied with the settings, click Next to start the installation process.

    The installation process might take some time.

    Note

    After Track-It! is installed successfully, you must restart your server.

  19. On the next page, make a note of your login credentials, select the I acknowledge and understand this check box and click Next.
  20. On the Thank you for choosing Track-It! page, select the required URL check box to launch Track-It! and click Finish
  21. After the login for the first time, you must change your password.
