Defining a critical data set list

You can use the CRITDSN parameter to specify a list of critical data sets in your environment that should never be placed on the same volume as any other data set in the list. However, CRITDSN is resource intensive and should be used only for a small list of critical data sets.

Use the following procedure to define critical data set lists.

  1. On the EZSRM Menu, select Parmlib Members.
  2. From the list of members, select CritList.
  3. In the CMD column, type E next to an active SMCRITxx member or place your cursor on the member name, and then press Enter.

    SMCRITxx is read by MainView SRM during system startup. The xx suffix specification in SMMSYSxx indicates which version of SMCRITxx contains critical data sets for the particular configuration of MainView SRM that is being executed. For more information, see Defining a SMCRITxx member.

  4. Edit the member to specify the data center pool definitions.
  5. Press PF3 to save and exit the member.
  6. In the CMD column, type R next to the SMCRITxx member that you edited, and then press Enter.

    The member is refreshed.

    Note

    By refreshing SMCRITxx, you make it the active critical list. It remains active until SVOS is stopped or until you refresh another critical list member.

  7. Define and activate the DASDPOOL or SMSSELCT functions with the critical list active.
  8. Activate the system member that includes the critical list information.
  9. Add your critical list to the rule list.

Defining a SMCRITxx member

Critical lists are defined on SET statements. INC/EXC statements that follow a SET statement identify the devices to be included or excluded from a critical data set list. Use the following procedure to define the SMCRITxx member by using MainView SRM SET statements.

Issue the following SET statement:

CRITDSN=<xxxxxx>


In the CRITDSN parameter,xxxxxx is the name of a list of critical data set names to be used by the VOLSEL option of CRITDSN.

You can also keep critical data sets from being allocated on the same EMC physical disk. See the DASDPOOL function and the CRITEMC parameter.
