Configuring the reconciliation method for assets in Smart IT

If a sandbox dataset is enabled in BMC Asset Management (for example, BMC.ASSET.SANDBOX), assets that you create or modify go through a reconciliation process before they are moved to the production database. For example, when you save a new asset, the system sends a call (request) to the Reconciliation Engine to run a reconciliation job.

The sandbox dataset used by BMC Asset Management is configured in the AST:AppSettings form, which you access from the Custom Configuration tab in the Application Administration Console in the BMC Remedy ITSM mid-tier UI. When you install Smart IT, a new Sandbox Job Calls setting is added to the AST:AppSettings form. This setting allows you to configure the reconciliation method for assets in both Smart IT and the BMC Remedy ITSM mid-tier UI.

Overview of reconciliation methods

The Sandbox Job Calls setting has different options for reconciliation, depending on your BMC Remedy ITSM version.

BMC Remedy ITSM 9.1 and later versions
  • Inline—(Default) Reconciliation job requests are processed immediately.
  • Scheduled—Reconciliation job requests are processed in accordance with any sandbox schedules. Use this setting to do reconciliation outside of heavy use hours to minimize the impact on users.
  • Continuous—Reconciliation job requests are processed according to the interval specified for continuous jobs in the Reconciliation Engine. Use this setting in cases where a limited number of assets are being reconciled or when there is less load. For more information, see Creating a continuous reconciliation job in the BMC Atrium Core documentation.
Pre-9.1 BMC Remedy ITSM versions
  • Inline—(Default) Reconciliation job requests are processed immediately.
  • ScheduledReconciliation job requests are not processed, unless unless you have created a customization that performs scheduled reconciliation. This option is not used by the BMC Asset Management mid-tier UI.

For pre-9.1 BMC Remedy ITSM versions, the Scheduled option can be enabled by creating a new scheduled reconciliation job on the BMC.ASSET.SANDBOX dataset or by modifying the existing reconciliation job. When you select the Scheduled option, Smart IT creates or updates the asset in the BMC.ASSET.SANDBOX dataset and reconciliation occurs based on your schedule. You must also disable the appropriate workflow in BMC Asset Management to allow for the reconciliation process to be scheduled.

In addition, after you install Smart IT on a pre-9.1 BMC Remedy ITSM version, the Sandbox Job Calls setting is added to the not AST:AppSettings form, but it is not visible. Reconciliation job requests are processed as Inline by default. If you want to change the setting to Scheduled to support your customization, you must make the the Sandbox Job Calls field visible on the AST:AppSettings form. You can do so by creating an overlay of the AST:AppSettings form by using BMC Developer Studio, and then moving the Sandbox Job Calls field into the default view.
