Applying models while importing CIs and assets

To ensure data consistency and standardization, you can also apply models while importing CIs and assets from external data sources. CIs and assets can be imported by using the Salesforce Data Loader, Pentaho packages that are provided by BMC Remedyforce, or custom Pentaho packages.

Because the Model Name field is of the Lookup data type, you cannot directly import data into this field. Instead, you must map the external data source field that contains the model information (model name or part number) to the Model field (data type: Text) in the Base Element object. However, you do not have to display the Model attribute in the Instance Editor.

While importing CIs and assets from other data sources, the system checks if the Model field (data type: Text) value of an imported record matches the Model Name field in all existing records. If no match is found, the system checks for a matching value in the Part Number field. Based on whether a matching value is found or not, one of the following actions is performed:

ScenarioAction performed
Matching model is found in the Model object.

The existing model is populated in the Model Name field of the imported CIs and assets. In addition, any other attribute values that are configured in the model are also applied to the CIs and assets.

Note: Before importing CIs and assets, BMC recommends that you create the appropriate model records.

Matching model is not found in the Model object.

No value is populated in the Model Name field of the imported CIs and assets. However, the imported value in the Model field is retained.

If models are not applied while importing CIs and assets, you can generate models based on unique values in the Model attribute in these instances. In addition, the generated models are automatically linked to the corresponding CI or asset instances, but only if the Model Name attribute (date type: Lookup) in these instances is not already populated.

The following figure outlines the end-to-end process for applying models while importing CIs and assets from external data sources.
