Partition Data Section for PR/SM environments

The Partition Data Section shows logical and physical processor utilization by partition.

The partitions are grouped by the type of physical processors that they use: standard CP, ICF (Internal Coupling Facility), IFL(Integrated Facility for Linux), zAAP (zSeries Application Assist Processor), zIIP (zSeries Integrated Information Processor), and so on.

A partition having multiple processor types appears multiple times, once for each processor type that it has. The last partition reported for each processor type is always PHYSICAL. PHYSICAL is the PR/SM overhead that cannot be attributed to any individual partition.

Warning

Important

If a partition has a mixture of shared and dedicated processors, in addition to an existing line for each partition, two additional lines show data similar to the partition level line but separately for shared and dedicated processors.

An example of the Partition Data Section of the CPU Utilization Report for a PR/SM environment is shown in the following figure:

Partition Data Section field descriptions

The table below describes each field in the Partition Data section of the CPU Utilization Report:

Field

Description

MVS PARTITION NAME

Name of the home partition

NO OF PARTITIONS

Number of PR/SM partitions that are defined for this processor complex

CAPPING

Capping options that are active on the home partition

  • INITIAL—whether initial capping is active
  • LPAR HW—whether LPAR absolute capping is active
  • GROUP HW—whether hardware group absolute capping is active
  • ABS MSU—whether absolute MSU capping is active

IMAGE CAPACITY

CPU capacity in millions of service units (MSU) per hour

DISPATCH INTERVAL

Time slice interval in milliseconds

The word DYNAMIC indicates a variable time slice interval.

CAPACITY GROUP NAME

Name of the LPAR capacity group if the home partition belongs to one

CAPACITY GROUP LIMIT

MSU limit for the capacity group

Warning

Important

An asterisk (*) immediately following the value in this field indicates that the partition was a member of the capacity group for less than four hours, with respect to the end of the interval. That is, a complete four-hour history of MSU consumption was not available to WLM, and the group limit could not be guaranteed.

PHYSICAL PROCESSORS

Number of physical processors in this processor complex

If processor types are identified by hardware (CP, ICF, IFL, ...), the next lines list the | number of physical processors of each type.

CAPACITY AVAILABLE

Presents the capacity that is available to the partition during the reporting interval

This field represents the long-term average of CPU service in MSUs per hour, which would have been allowed by the capacity group limit but was not used by its members. If the value shown is negative, the group is capped.

PARTITION

Up to eight-character partition name

Warning

Important

Partition PHYSICAL, if present, is actually not a logical partition; rather, it is a placeholder for PR/SM overhead that cannot be attributed to any individual partition.

STATUS

State of the partition, either ACTIVE or INACTIVE, at the end of the report interval

If the partition was inactive at the end of the report interval but had been previously active, the rest of the line is blank except for the AVG % DISPATCHED columns.

WEIGHT

Average weight of the partition; possible values are:

  • nnn —all logical processors not dedicated
  • DED—all logical processors dedicated
  • DNE—a mixture of dedicated and nondedicated processors; nondedicated processors have equal weights
  • DNN—a mixture of dedicated and nondedicated processors; nondedicated processors do not have equal weights
  • TOTAL—sum of the weights of the shared LPARS

BT

Boost type that was active for the interval

Possible values for this field are as follows:

  • Z—zIIP Boost
  • S—Speed Boost
  • — N/A

LOG PRCR

  • CNT—if partition is managed by WLM, the average number of online processors; if partition is not managed, the number of logical processors defined for the partition
  • TYPE —processor types displayed if identified by hardware

    Warning

    Important

zAAPs are displayed as ZAAP (on IBM z9 or later CPUs) or ICF (on pre-z9 CPUs). zIIPs are displayed as ZIIP.

MSU

The following columns are applicable only for standard CPs:

  • DEF— defined capacity of the partition in MSU/hour
  • Defined capacity can be specified for a partition running z/OS on a z900 machine. Three dashes (---) appear if the partition does not have defined capacity.
Warning

Important

If an asterisk (*) immediately follows the value in this field, it indicates that the defined capacity changed during the reporting interval.

  • USED—MSU per hour actually used
  • %DEF—percentage of used MSU/hour over defined capacity
  • Three dashes (---) appear if the partition does not have defined capacity.

CAPPING

%WLM—percentage of time that WLM capped the partition

Three dashes (---) appear if the partition does not have defined capacity.

Warning

Important

This column is applicable only for standard CPs.

DEF:

  • YES—indicates that hard cap was specified for the partition; NO indicates that the partition was not hard capped
  • I—1st position - whether initial capping is active
  • L—2nd position - whether LPAR absolute capping is active
  • G—3rd position - whether hardware group absolute capping is active
  • nnn—LPAR absolute capping limit

    Warning

    Important

If LPAR absolute capping is the only form of capping active on the partition (-L-), then the capping limit value is displayed in number of CPUs.

%DISP LOG

  • TOTAL—percentage of dispatch time over online time, for all logical processors of an LPAR
The dispatch time includes LPAR management time.
  • EFFTV—percentage of effective dispatch time over online time, for all logical processors of an LPAR
The effective dispatch time is the total dispatch time minus PR/SM management time.

%DISP PHY

  • EFFTV—percentage of effective dispatch time of all logical processors of an LPAR over online time of all physical processors
The effective dispatch time is the total dispatch time minus PR/SM management time.
  • OVH—percentage of PR/SM management time of all logical processors of an LPAR over online time of all physical processors
The PR/SM management time is commonly referred to as PR/SM overhead.
  • TOTAL—percentage of dispatch time of all logical processors of an LPAR over online time of all physical processors
The dispatch time includes PR/SM management time.

    Warning

    Important

The TOTAL column is the sum of the EFFTV and OVH columns.

CPU DISPATCH PERCENT

A graphic representation of the logical and physical processor dispatched percentage, where L shows the logical value and P shows the physical value
