Creating policy actions

This section describes how to create a policy action.

Policy actions can be created during the agent policy creation process, or independently so that they can applied to policies as required.

To create a policy action

  1. From the Policies tab, click the Policy Actions tab.
  2. Click the Create a New Policy Action icon.
  3. In the displayed Create a New Policy Action dialog box, select a policy action type from the list and add a name and description for the new action, and then click Create.

The right side of the Policies tab is refreshed with a new Policy Components that use this Policy action section, which lists policy components associated with the currently selected component, as shown in the following image.

  4. [Advanced settings] Optionally, you can specify when the policy action runs and its priority.

    • Run Action When:

      • An object is discovered: If a new object is discovered - which can happen when it is created, when a new agent is added to the services, or when discovery is run manually - then execute this action. This is normally the correct choice, and is the default.
      • An object is removed: If an object that was discovered and monitored is no longer available - this might happen if the object is deleted, the agent is removed from monitoring, or the object is deprecated - then execute this action (this executes the action in reverse, meaning it should 'remove the history association' or whatever other action).
      • An object is discovered and removed: If an object is either added or removed, then execute the action.
    • Action Priority: This sets the priority of this action; 1 is highest priority, 99 the lowest. If there are multiple actions that conflict with each other, for example, with History Template Association, the priority helps to determine which activity to execute.
  5. Define Action Details as relevant; this section changes according to the action type selected. For example, if you selected the Run Script type, you must enter a script name and script arguments and select whether or not to use credentials. Similarly, if you selected the Agent Discovery Sweep action type, you must define the maximum sweep duration period.
  6. Click CommitPolicy.png to commit and save the policy action.
