Working with MQ logging features

This section describes how MainView Middleware Administrator (MVMA) works with the MQ logging functionality, and includes:

Reviewing a queue manager’s log status

The Status (Log) option in the operations dropdown menu enables you to retrieve the log status for an assigned queue manager (within the queue manager’s properties view).

Depending on the assigned queue manager’s platform, the Status (Log) reports the current status of all log attributes (if the queue manager is defined on a distributed system) or reports current log system parameters and information (if the assigned queue manager resides on a z/OS system).

To review a queue manager’s log status on distributed platforms

  1. From the Navigation Panel, navigate to the relevant queue manager located on a distributed platform.
  2. From the Operations drop-down menu in the Properties screen for the relevant queue manager, select Status (Log). The following dialog is displayed:

  3. Review the displayed data as required, and then click OK to close the dialog.

To review log system parameters for a z/OS queue manager

  1. From the Navigation Panel, navigate to the relevant queue manager located on a z/OS mainframe.
  2. From the Operations drop-down menu in the Properties screen for the relevant queue manager, select Status (Log). The following dialog is displayed.

  3. Review the displayed data as required, and then click OK to close the dialog.

Setting a log

The Set Log option in the operations dropdown menu in the queue manager’s properties view corresponds with IBM MQ’s SET LOG command, which has a different effect depending on whether the assigned queue manager is on a distributed platform or on a z/OS mainframe. The operation is applicable to the queue manager’s properties currently open in the MVMA workspace.

Set Log (for a Distributed platform)

If the assigned MQ queue manager is on a distributed platform the operation is used to notify the queue manager that archiving of a log is complete. Note that successful completion of this operation requires the log management type for the destination queue manager to be Archive

To signal a queue manager’s log extent was archived

  1. From the Navigation Panel, navigate to the relevant queue manager located on a distributed platform.
  2. From the Operations dropdown menu in the Properties screen for the relevant queue manager, select Set Log. The following popup dialog is displayed:

    SetLog_distributed.png
  3. In the Archive Log field, define the log extent that has been archived (e.g. S0000003.LOG).
  4. Click Set Log. A confirmation message is displayed in the Status Panel.

Set Log (for z/OS mainframe)

If the assigned MQ queue manager is on a z/OS mainframe, the operation is used to dynamically change certain log system parameter values initially set by the system parameter module at queue manager startup.

To set log system parameters for a queue manager

  1. From the Navigation Panel, navigate to the relevant queue manager located on a z/OS system.
  2. From the Operations drop-down menu in the Properties screen for the relevant queue manager, select Set Log. The following popup dialog is displayed:

    SetLog_zos.png
  3. In the Parameter Type field, select either Initial to reset the log system parameters to their initial values, or Set to set the parameters values as defined in the dialog’s fields.
  4. Click Set Log. A confirmation message is displayed in the Status Panel.

Resetting the queue manager

The Reset Queue Manager option in the operations dropdown menu in the queue manager’s properties view can be used as part of your backup and recovery procedure for queue managers on distributed platforms or to reset publish/subscribe.

To reset the queue manager

  1. From the Navigation Panel, navigate to the relevant queue manager.
  2. From the Operations drop-down menu in the Properties screen for the relevant queue manager select Reset Queue Manager. The following pop-up dialog is displayed:

    resetQM.png
  3. If the assigned queue manager is defined on a distributed platform select Advance Log in the Action field to request the queue manager to start writing to a new log extent.

Alternatively, depending on the enabled logging strategy, select Reduce Log or Archive Log to reduce the number of log extents as necessary or to notify the queue manager that the log extents up to the one specified in the Archive Log field have been archived.

On distributed platforms, select Collect Statistics to request the queue manager to end the current statistics collection period writing the statistics collected.

On all platforms, select PubSub to reset publish/subscribe for the assigned queue manager.
  4. Click Reset. A confirmation message is displayed in the Status Panel.
