Using a pre-created database for Smart IT

Information

This topic is related to the Smart IT version 1.1. For the documentation for other versions of Smart IT, see Documentation for other versions of Smart IT.

If you have database access restrictions and cannot allow the BMC Remedy with Smart IT (version 1.1) installer create a database, use the following procedures to create a pre-existing database.

To create a Microsoft SQL database

Smart IT uses 20MB for each schema.

  1. Log on to your Microsoft SQL Server, and create an empty database.
    Example:  SmartIT

  2. Create three users for the Smart IT business schema, Smart IT system schema, and Openfire.
    Example: SmartIT_business, SmartIT_system, openfire
  3. Assign all three users to the database created in step 1.
  4. Specify the following permissions for all three users:
    • grant connect
    • create schema
    • create table

      Examples:
      grant connect, create schema, create table to SmartIT_business;
      grant connect, create schema, create table to SmartIT_system;
      grant connect, create schema, create table to openfire;

      Optionally you can directly run the following script in Management Studio

      USE master
      GO
      CREATE DATABASE SmartIT
      GO
      use SmartIT
      GO
      CREATE LOGIN openfire WITH PASSWORD = N'SmartIT',DEFAULT_DATABASE=[SmartIT], CHECK_EXPIRATION=off,CHECK_POLICY=off
      GO
      CREATE LOGIN SmartIT_System WITH PASSWORD = N'SmartIT', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[SmartIT], CHECK_EXPIRATION=off,CHECK_POLICY=off
      GO
      CREATE LOGIN SmartIT_Business WITH PASSWORD = N'SmartIT', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[SmartIT], CHECK_EXPIRATION=off,CHECK_POLICY=off
      GO
      CREATE USER openfire from LOGIN openfire
      GO
      CREATE USER SmartIT_System from LOGIN SmartIT_System
      GO
      CREATE USER SmartIT_Business from LOGIN SmartIT_Business
      GO
      CREATE SCHEMA openfire AUTHORIZATION openfire
      GO
      CREATE SCHEMA SmartIT_System AUTHORIZATION SmartIT_System
      GO
      CREATE SCHEMA SmartIT_Business AUTHORIZATION SmartIT_Business
      GO
      ALTER USER openfire WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = openfire
      GO
      ALTER USER SmartIT_System WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = SmartIT_System
      GO
      ALTER USER SmartIT_Business WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = SmartIT_Business
      GO
      GRANT CONNECT,CREATE TABLE,CREATE SCHEMA TO openfire
      GO
      GRANT CONNECT,CREATE TABLE,CREATE SCHEMA TO SmartIT_Business
      GO
      GRANT CONNECT,CREATE TABLE,CREATE SCHEMA TO SmartIT_System
      GO
  5. Run installer.
    Instead using the sa credentials, you can use the Smart IT business credentials.

To create an Oracle database

Smart IT uses the Users tablespace and 20MB for each schema.

  1. Use the following commands to create the Smart IT Business and System and OpenFire users before running the installer:

    create user SmartIT_Business identified by SmartIT default tablespace
    USERS temporary tablespace TEMP quota unlimited on USERS;

    create user SmartIT_System identified by SmartIT default tablespace USERS
    temporary tablespace TEMP quota unlimited on USERS;

    create user openfire identified by openfire default tablespace USERS
    temporary tablespace TEMP quota unlimited on USERS;

    grant create sequence, create table, create view, create session, alter
    session, alter user to SmartIT_Business;

    grant create sequence, create table, create view, create session, alter
    session, alter user to SmartIT_System;

    grant create sequence, create table, create view, create session, alter
    session, alter user to openfire;
  2. Run the installer.

If you have pre-created the database and users, select the Use Pre-created DB option on the RDBMS Selection screen during installation. When you select this options you are not asked to enter system credentials.

    There is not enough information in this document to create an Oracle DB Log into Oracle and create two users Grant DBA role to the users

    What should be the minimum size and recommended growth scale? Does granting the users a dba role then allow the installer to create the DB object?

    While going for pre-created database, the privileges mentioned in this pages includes "Alter Session and Alter User" but the link https://docs.bmc.com/docs/digitalworkplacebasic/33/pre-creating-oracle-database-724773395.html does not talk about "Alter User" privilege. Do we need "Alter User" privilege for SmartIT? If yes, can we please add details in terms of why we need it technically and is this something which can be revoked after installation?

    Also, explanation about USERS tablespace with respect to SmarIT will be useful on this page.
