Methods for obtaining the Installation System image

BMC distributes its products as image files: an image file for the Installation System and image files for the products.

Images are obtained from the BMC Electronic Software Distribution File Transfer Protocol (BMC ESD FTP) site or from physical media (a USB flash drive). The BMC ESD FTP site supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), and File Transfer Protocol Secure (FTPS).

You can use any of these methods to obtain the Installation System image:

  • Direct file transfer

In this method (recommended method), you use FTP, SFTP, or FTPS to transfer the image directly to your mainframe.

  • Web browser

You use a web browser to copy the image to your workstation, and then you upload the image to your mainframe. This method is used when you cannot use FTP.

  • Physical media

You obtain the image from physical media and then upload the image to your mainframe. This method is used when you cannot download files from an external site.

Important

The following considerations apply to using the BMC ESD FTP site:

  • To download from the BMC ESD FTP site, you must have an ESD user ID and password (which changes annually). To view the current password, go to File server and certificate information. If prompted, provide a valid support user ID and password. To register for a support user ID and password, go to http://www.bmc.com/support.

  • Your site might have restrictions that apply to transferring files through FTP, SFTP, or FTPS (such as byte limits, or network or server timeout limits). If so, specify FTP, SFTP, or FTPS proxy and firewall access information in the Local FTP Site Options section of the Site Wide Default Values panel.
