CMDB Overview dashboard

As a BMC Helix CMDB dashboard user, use the CMDB Overview dashboard to view the following information:

  • Total number of CIs in CMDB
  • Trend of CIs created in a specific time-period
  • Distribution of CIs across datasets, classes, and types

Example: Viewing information of CIs in classes and newly created CIs in CMDB Overview dashboard

Chris, a Configuration Manager, wants to view the number of new CIs that are created in the previous week, and wants to view the number of CIs in one of the classes, such as the BMC_ComputerSystem class.

  1. Chris logs in to the BMC Helix Dashboards
  2. He selects Dashboards > Manage.
  3. In the search field, Chris enters Configuration Management > CMDB Overview.

In the CMDB Overview dashboard, Chris performs the following steps to view the information that he is looking for:

  1. He views the panel CMDB Data Creation Trend for information about new CIs created. 
  2. In the CI distribution by Class panel, he views the number of CIs in the BMC_ComputerSystem class. 
  3. For further details about the CIs in the BMC_ComputerSystem class, Chris opens the panel Details of CI distribution by Class.
    The CI details such as CI Name, Short Description, and Dataset ID, are displayed. 

To view the CMDB Overview dashboard

  1. In the left navigation pane, hover your mouse over the Dashboards icon and click Manage.
  2. Click Configuration Management CMDB Overview.

    Tip: Quick access from the home page

    To quickly open the dashboard from the home page, mark it as a favorite by using the star icon. Additionally, after you open a dashboard, it is available under Recently viewed dashboards on the home page.

Panels in the CMDB Overview dashboard

Dashboard filtersDisplay the filters to view the information on the dashboard. You can filter the data on the CMDB dashboard by Dataset ID, Class ID, and CI Type. Additionally, you can filter the CMDB Data Creation Trend by using the date and time range global filter. By default, the search result displays the data for the last 30 days.

CMDB VolumeDisplays the total number of CIs and relationships that are present in CMDB.

CMDB Data Creation TrendDisplays the number of CIs that are created in a specific time-period and the trend. Use the global time-period filter to change the time-period.

Details of CMDB VolumeDisplays the distribution of CIs across different datasets in CMDB. To view additional CI details such as CI Name, Short Description, and Class ID, double-click the number displayed in the Count column. The CMDB CI Details - Drill-through page is displayed on a new browser tab.

CI Distribution by ClassDisplays the distribution of CIs across all the classes in percentage value.

Details of CI Distribution by ClassDisplays the count of CIs in all the classes. To view additional CI details such as CI Name, Short Description, and Category, double-click the number shown in the Count column. The CMDB CI Details - Drill-through page is displayed on a new browser tab.

CI Distribution by TypeDisplays the distribution of CIs in all the types in percentage value.

Details of CI Distribution by TypeDisplays the count of CIs by Type. To view additional CI details such as CI Name, Short Description, and Category, double-click the number shown in the Count column. The CMDB CI Details - Drill-through page is displayed on a new browser tab.
