This documentation supports releases of BMC Helix Continuous Optimization up to December 31, 2021. To view the latest version, select the version from the Product version menu.

Creating an analysis

You can create analyses by using the analysis wizard, the quick analysis tool, or by creating them manually.

To create an analysis by using the wizard

  1. In the Workspace tab, select the domain for which you want to analyze data.
  2. Click Works to access the domain's Works folder.
  3. Select Add > Add analysis.
  4. Follow the wizard to specify the analysis properties.

    PanelDescription
    Welcome

To skip the wizard and go to the advanced analysis editor, click Skip wizard and continue using the analysis editor. For more information, see .Manually creating an analysis v21.02.

    Entity filter

Select the entities to analyze from the following options:

    • All systems/business drivers in container domain (that is, the domain in which the analysis is created).
    • All systems/business drivers in container domain and its subdomains
    • Use a custom entity filter. Choose from:
      • All entities in container domain
      • All entities in container domain and its subdomains
For more information, see Managing entity filters.
    Analysis type

Select the type of analysis that you want to create. The available analysis types depend on the entities (or entity filters) selected in the previous step. The analysis types are detailed in Analyzing domain data.

TemplateSelect the analysis template to quickly create an analysis by selecting the required metrics. Template groups and templates listed in this step are based on the system types in the selected domain and the entity filter associated with the selected domain.
    • Template group: Select the required template group from the list.
    • Template: Select the required template from the list.
    • Template description: Each template is briefly described when selected. For more information, see Analyzing domain data.
    • Metrics used by template: Displays the metrics that are used by the selected template.
    Time resolution

Set the time resolution for the analysis, that is, the level of detail at which data will be aggregated over time.

    Time filter

Select the time filter for the analysis. You can select an existing time filter or create a custom one.

If the selected entities only contain data for a limited time period, the wizard informs you about it so that you can choose the most suitable filter.

For more information about time filters, see Filters.

    Custom time filter

Note: This step appears only if you chose to specify a custom time filter in the previous step.

Select the desired time period for the analysis based on the hint provided by the wizard in the previous step; click Advanced to display additional filtering options.

For more information about time filters, see Filters.

    Name

By default, the analysis is created using a standard name that summarizes the key information specified (for example, Estimation Utilization - DAY).

You can choose if you want to run the analysis immediately, schedule it for execution, or continue editing it with the analysis editor, that lets you modify the options pre-configured by the analysis template.

    Summary

Click Finish to create the analysis. The analysis is created and runs as per the schedule selected in the earlier step.

  5. Click Finish.

The new analysis is now visible in the Works folder of the selected domain.

To create an analysis by using the quick analysis tool

Information

This video describes the functionality of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, but it is valid for BMC Helix Continuous Optimization too.

The following video (2:59) illustrates the process of adding and managing time series by using the quick analysis tool.

 https://youtu.be/3X4nflLFzgk

  1. Access the Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications section.
  2. Perform one of the following actions:
    • Navigate to and select the domain, system, business driver, or metric for which you want to analyze data.
    • Locate the resource metric that you want to analyze, by accessing the Metrics tab in the detail page of an entity, or by using the Search tool.
  3. Click Quick analysis.
  4. Follow the procedure detailed in Using the Quick analysis tool.

Note

If you create analyses by using the wizard, quick analyses are not permanently stored by default.

Adding a time series analysis

Information

These videos describe the functionality of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, but they are valid for BMC Helix Continuous Optimization too.

The following video (3:16) illustrates the process of adding a performance vs time or load vs time analysis (time series) by using the quick analysis tool or the analysis wizard.

Where to go from here

After creating a new analysis, you might want to Change the properties of an analysis.
