Using the FootPrints 12 migration tools

You must contact BMC customer support to get the migration tools. Before you import the data to your FootPrints 12 system, based on your environment, you must create a data back up set of your FootPrints 11 system.

Creating a FootPrints 11 export backup set

Based on your environment, you can create your FootPrints 11 export backup sets for either Windows or Linux environment. You can also create an export backup set by using command line without a graphic user interface (GUI).

Creating a FootPrints 11 export backup set on a Windows environment

  1. Download the Migration Export tool and copy the downloaded files to the FootPrints version 11 server from which you are migrating to FootPrints version12.x.
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded file and run the setup program.
  3. Create a folder named Migration or MIGR, and move the footprints-sc-migration-export-12.x-nn.nn.zip file to the folder.
  4. Extract the contents of the footprints-sc-migration-export-12.x-nn.nn.zip file.
  5. Run the setup.exe file and follow the below instructions.
    Before you begin the export, stop the FootPrints (Scheduler, Watcher and Tomcat) and IIS services.
    1. Enter the path for FootPrints 11 folder location. By default the path is C:\FootPrintsServiceCore.
    2. Enter the location for FootPrints 11 backup files.
    3. Based on your preference, select an appropriate option:
      • Configuration and Data
      • Configuration Only
    4. Select the workspaces that you want to migrate and click Next.
      You can also choose to migrate the archived workspaces.

  6. The migration export log file with name migrationexport_install_log.txt is created in a temporary folder %Temp%. A link to the log file is provided on the last screen of the Migration Export Tool wizard.
  7. The FootPrints 11 export backup set migration_backup_yyyymmdd_hhmmss is created in the directory specified by the user. A link to the backup set folder is provided on the last screen of the Migration Export Tool wizard.
    If this migration is for testing purposes, you can now safely restart the FootPrints 11 and IIS services.
  8. Compress the FootPrints 11 export backup set folder and copy it to the server where FootPrints version 12 is installed.

Creating a FootPrints 11 export backup set in a Linux environment

  1. Download the Migration Export tool and copy the downloaded files to the FootPrints version 11 server from which you are migrating to FootPrints version 12.x.
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded file and run the setup program.
  3. Create a folder named Migration or MIGR, and move the footprints-sc-migration-export-12.x-nn.nn.zip file to the folder.
  4. Extract the contents of the footprints-sc-migration-export-12.x-nn.nn.zip file.
  5. Run the setup.bin file and follow the below instructions.
    1. Enter the path for FootPrints 11 folder location. By default the path is C:\FootPrintsServiceCore.
    2. Enter the location for FootPrints 11 backup files.

    3. Based on your preference, select an appropriate option:
      • Configuration and Data
      • Configuration Only
    4. Select the workspaces that you want to migrate and click Next.
      You can also choose to migrate the archived workspaces.

  6. The migration export log file with name migrationexport_install_log.txt is created in temporary folder /tmp. A link to the log file is provided on the last screen of the Migration Export Tool wizard.

Creating a FootPrints 11 export backup set using the command line (no GUI)

You can perform the export of data from your FootPrints 11 system by using the command line (no GUI).

  1. Create an options file to use while running of the Migration Export tool using the command line, perform the following steps:
    1. Download the options migration export default options file.
    2. Rename the downloaded options file to "options.txt".
    3. Copy options.txt file to the system where FootPrints version 11 is installed.
    4. Edit the options.txt file and review settings based on hints provided in the options.txt file.
  2. Download Migration Export tool (FootPrints 12) to the server where FootPrints version 11 is installed.
    For example, an archive with the tool will have the following name:
    • footprints-migration-export-64bit-12.1.07.001-38.11.tar.gz (for Linux)
    • footprints-migration-export-12.1.07.001-38.11 (for Windows)
  3. Extract the content of the downloaded archive. 
  4. Run the Migration Export tool using the command line with the following command and choose the appropriate command line based on your operating system.
    • For Windows:Disk:\path\to\Footprints\export_tool\setup.exe -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE=Disk:\path\to\options\txt\file\options.txt
    • For Linux: path/to/Footprints/export_tool/setup.bin -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE=path/to/options/txt/file/options.txt
  5. The Migration Export tool generates a log file in the temporary folder. Navigate to %Temp% in Windows or to /tmp in Linux and inspect the migrationexport_install_log.txt file.
  6. Review the generated log file (migrationexport_install_log.txt) to ensure the Migration Export completed successfully. There should be a message similar to this near the end of the log file:

    FootPrints 12 Migration - Export Tool 12.1.07.001 install succeeded.

  7. The FootPrints 11 export backup set is created in the directory that was specified by you and is named as migration_backup_yyyymmdd_hhmmss.
  8. Compress the backup set folder and copy it to a server where FootPrints 12 is installed.

Importing the export backup set

You can run the migration Import tool to import the export backup set in the Windows or Linux environment or by using the command line (no GUI).

Importing the export backup set in the Windows environment

  1. Stop Tomcat service to perform an import of the FootPrints 11 export backup set.
  2. Run the setup.exe file.
    The default location of the file is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\FootPrints\bin\MigrationImport\Disk1.
  3. To continue, follow the below instructions:
    1. Enter the Username and Password of the FootPrints system administrator.
    2. Enter the path for FootPrints 11 export backup set to import.
    3. Follow the instructions further to complete migration import process.
    The Migration Import tool generates a migration import log file named migration-import.txt in the FootPrints log folder. The default location of the file is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\FootPrints\logs.
  4. Review the generated log file to ensure the Migration Import completed successfully. The following message at the end of the log file indicates that the migration completed successfully: 
    Migration process completed.
    Errors occured during migration: 0
    Actual total migration time: 0:17:18.708
  5. Start the Tomcat service. 

Importing the export backup set in the Linux environment

  1. Stop Tomcat service to perform an import of the FootPrints 11 export backup set.
  2. Run the setup.bin file.
    The default location of the file is /opt/bmc/FootPrints/bin/MigrationImport/Disk1.
  3. To continue, follow the below instructions:
    1. Enter the Username and Password of the FootPrints system administrator.
    2. Enter the path for FootPrints 11 export backup set to import.
    3. Follow the instructions further to complete migration import process.
    The Migration Import tool generates a migration import log file named migration-import.txt in the FootPrints log folder. The default location of the file is /opt/bmc/FootPrints/logs.
  4. Review the generated log file to ensure the Migration Import completed successfully. The following message at the end of the log file indicates that the migration completed successfully: 
    Migration process completed.
    Errors occurred during migration: 0
    Actual total migration time: 0:17:18.708
  5. Start Tomcat service.

Importing the export backup set using the command line (no GUI)

  1. To create an options file to use when running the Migration Import tool using the command line, perform the following steps:
    1. Download the options migration import default options file.
    2. Rename the options file to options.txt.
    3. Copy the options.txt file to the system where you have installed FootPrints version 12.
    4. Edit the options.txt file and review the settings FootPrints administrator user name, FootPrints administrator user password, and path to FootPrints 11 export backup set.
  2. Stop the Tomcat service to perform FootPrints 11 export backup set import.
    For example, execute the following command:

    • Disk:\path\to\tomcat\bin\shutdown.bat for Windows.
      When Tomcat is installed as a service, run the following command: net stop tomcat.
    • /opt/apache/tomcat7/bin/shutdown.sh for Linux.
  3. Run the Migration Import tool using the command line with the following command:
    • For Windows: Disk:\path\to\Footprints\bin\MigrationImport\Disk1\setup.exe -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE=Disk:\path\to\options\txt\file\options.txt
    • Linux: /path/to/Footprints/bin/MigrationImport/Disk1/setup.bin -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE=path/to/options/txt/file/options.txt
  4. The Migration Import tool generates a migration install log file named migration_install_log.txt in the temporary folder of the user running the tool.
    For example, %TEMP% in Windows and /tmp in Linux. 

  5. Review the generated log file migration_install_log.txt to ensure the Migration Import completed successfully. The following message at the end of the log file indicates that the install completed successfully: 
    FootPrints 12 Migration - Import Tool 12.1.07.001 install succeeded.

  6. The Migration Import tool generates a migration import log file named migration-import.txt in the FootPrints log folder:

    • For Windows: C:\Program Files\BMC Software\FootPrints\logs.

    • For Linux: /opt/bmc/FootPrints/logs.
  7. Review the generated log file named migration-import.txt to ensure the Migration Import completed successfully.
    The following message at the end of the log file indicates that the migration completed successfully: 
    Migration process completed.
    Errors occurred during migration: 0
    Actual total migration time: 0:13:11.106

  8. Start the Tomcat service.
    For example, execute the following command:

    • For Windows: Disk:\path\to\tomcat\bin\startup.bat. When Tomcat is installed as a service, run the command net start tomcat.
    • For Linux: /opt/apache/tomcat7/bin/startup.sh
