Importing container templates
You can save a container's configuration settings as a template in xml format and use it to restore these settings or to create containers. This is particularly useful when you want to standardize the containers for your environment. It can also be helpful when creating or updating containers in a test system that you need to move to the production system.
Warning
Do not use a template to overwrite an existing container configurations in a production environment unless you have an expertise in this area. If not done correctly, it might significantly damage your current configurations and possibly cause data loss. BMC is working on providing better documentation for this area.
Prerequisite
Before you can import a template, you must export the container's configuration settings. For detailed instructions, see Exporting container configurations.
Note
You can only create containers based on templates which are created from the same container versions. For example, you can only create a container in FootPrints by importing an xml template file that was created by exporting a container of the same xml container template version. If the templates are created from different container template versions, the following error message is displayed:
Message: Template has an unsupported version number: "1.0"

To import a container template
You can import a template that you previously exported for a container and reapply its configuration settings.
- Open the container that you want to modify:
- Click the Administration tab.
- In the appropriate section, click the name of the container or click Manage to open the container Administration page. Then double-click the container.
The container details page appears.
- Click Actions > Apply template file.
The Apply Template to dialog box appears. - Click Browse, select the XML template file that you want to apply, and click Open.
The selected file appears in the File Name field. - Click OK.
A warning message appears, stating that the changes cannot be undone and may delete the container data. - >Click Yes.
The Template applied successfully message appears. Publish the container to implement your changes:
- Click Save and Publish.
>A confirmation message appears. - Click Yes.
The Publication Succeeded message appears, showing the number of errors and warnings.
- Click Save and Publish.

Please change the first paragraph to explicitly say NEVER import a workspace template over an existing workspace on another server.
Customers and business partners are following this advice and badly breaking Footprints 12.1. This method is not currently supported, and is not recommended by BMC Footprints Support or product development. There is no check in the application to stop this from happening.
Please also add the warning, "Applying a template over an existing workspace will drop all current settings, and can cause irreparable data lose.
