Creating CIs

A configuration item (CI) is any item of information technology (IT), including data or documents, that is or will be managed for your system. Agents and Administrators can create CIs, edit them, link them to tickets, and review the impact of changing them. Agents can view the details of CIs that are linked to their tickets but customers cannot.

You can create a CI from the CMDB Home page or create linked CIs from other records such as tickets, solutions, contacts, and services.

The following topics are provided:

To create a CI

  1. From the CMDB Home page, click Actions > New and select the CMDB and CI type that you want to create.
If the CMDB Home page is not visible, click the More tab at the top of window and select CMDB to open it. The new CI form appears at the bottom of the page.
  2. In the Name field, enter the name of the new CI.
  3. In the Status field, select the appropriate status.
  4. In the Criticality field, select the level of criticality.
  5. (Optional) In the Version field, enter the version of this CI.
  6. Fill in any other fields on this form as needed to provide complete information about this CI.
  7. Do one of the following:

    • To submit the current changes, but continue working on the record to make further changes, click Save.
    • To save and close the form, click Submit.

The new CI is created and appears on the CMDB Home page.

To create a linked CI from another record

The Select Item to Create dialog box appears.

  4. Click Apply.
