Managing business rules

You can edit business rules and copy existing rules to define new ones. If you are testing new settings for a rule, it is to create a copy of the rule and change the copy to avoid impacting the production environment accidentally. You can delete business rules that are no longer useful. If you want to disable a rule rather than delete it, follow the instructions in Activating and deactivating business rules.

To edit, copy or delete a business rule

  1. Open the container and item that contain the business rule you want to copy:
    1. Click the Administration tab.
    2. In the appropriate section, click the name of the container or click Manage to open the container Administration page. Then, double-click the container.
      The container details page appears. 
    3. In the left pane, click the item link (such as Record Definitions in workspaces or Contacts in address books).
      The Items page appears. 
    4. Double-click the item that you want to modify.
      The Item details page appears.
  2. In the left pane, click Business Rules.
    The rules associated with this item appear in the right pane.
  3. Perform one of the following actions:

    To edit a business rule
    1. Double-click the rule that you want to modify.
    2. In the Rule Builder page, modify the fields as needed, using the information in Configuring business rules.
    3. Click Save.
    4. (Optional) To change the order in which the rules are triggered:
      1. At the far right side of the actions bar, click Grid view.
        The rules are arranged in a list.
      2. Select a rule in the grid and perform any of the following actions:
        • Click the up and down arrows.
        • Type a number in the first part of the Order column.
        • Drag the rule to a new location.
      3. (Optional) To filter the list:
        • In the Select View field, select to view only business rules or only rules related to a workflow process.
        • Click a column heading. Then, select Filter and the type of rule that you want to view.
          The triggering sequence is not changed when you use the rule type filter. However, when the list is filtered, the OrderEdit, and Copy Rule actions are disabled until you clear your filter selections.
          If you click a column heading and re-sort the list, the triggering sequence of the rules changes to match the new arrangement.
    To copy a business rule
    1. Select the rule that you want to duplicate and then click Copy rule.
      The Rule Builder page appears, showing the settings selected in the original rule. The Title field starts with "Copy of" followed by the original rule title.
    2. Modify the fields as needed, using the information in Configuring business rules.
    3. Click Save.
    4. In the breadcrumb trail, click the Item link.
      You are returned to the Rules pane.

    To delete a business rule
    1. Select the rule that you want to delete, and click Delete.
  4. Click Save.
  5. To implement your changes, in the breadcrumb trail, click the container link and click Save and Publish.
