Specifying a database and compression technique
Specify the database you want to compress, and indicate if you want to include or exclude specific segments. Specify the compression techniques you want the Trial to use, and indicate if you want to register the segments at the end of the Trial and create registration records.
If you select option 5 (Trial Utility) on the primary menu (Using-the-BMC-AMI-Data-Packer-for-IMS-Primary-Menu), the Trial Utility panel shown in the following figure is displayed.

Command ===> _________________________________________________________________- The Database field is required. Type the DBD name of the database you want to compress.
- Indicate the type of database. Type 1 (Full function) to specify a full function database or 2 (DEDB) to specify a DEDB. The default is 1 (Full function).
- You can specify Segment Selection Options to select segments to be included or excluded from the compression. Leave the following two fields blank if you want to perform a Trial on all segments of the database.
- For Include/Exclude, type 1 (Include) to include the segments listed. Type 2 (Exclude) to exclude them from the Trial.
- For Segment Name(s), you can specify a list of up to eight segments within the database that you want to include or exclude from the trial.
- The Compression Technique is required. Select one of the following techniques; if you do not specify a technique, the default is 9 (ALL):
- 1 (SH - Static Huffman)
- 2 (BC - Basic Character)
- 3 (EC - Extended Character)
- 4 (HW - Hardware)
- 5 (HY - Hybrid)
- 6 (CD - Custom Hardware Dictionary)
- 7 (ST - Shared Table)
- 8 (CH - Custom Huffman)
- 9 (ALL)—ALL includes Static Huffman, Basic Character, Extended Character, Hardware, and Hybrid. You must specify a Shared Table name for Trial Shared Table and/or Build Shared Table. You must specify a Custom Hardware Dictionary name for Trial Custom HW Dictionary and/or Build Custom HW Dictionary.
- If you select 6 (CD) as the compression technique, then you must indicate a dictionary name in one or both of the following fields:
- For Build Custom HW Dict, specify the name of the hardware dictionary you want to build. You only need to build a dictionary once, but it must be built using the Trial utility.
- For Trial Custom HW Dict, specify the name of the hardware dictionary that has been previously built.
- If you select 7 (ST) as the compression technique, then you must indicate a table name in one or both of the following fields:
- For Build Shared Table, specify the name of the table you want to build. You only need to build a table once, but it must be built using the Trial utility.
- For Trial Shared Table, specify the table name of a Shared Table that has been previously built.
- Type Y or N in the Register trial field to indicate whether you want to register the segments at the end of the Trial run. The default is N.
- If you select Y, segment registration records, table records, and dictionary records are created in the DPICDS; the records are created at the STAGE level.
- To build a Custom Hardware Dictionary, select 6 (CD), indicate a table name for Build Custom HW Dict, and specify Y for registration.
- To build a Shared Table, select 7 (ST), indicate a table name for Build Shared Table, and specify Y for registration.
- To register Custom Huffman as the compression technique, select 8 (CH) and specify Y for registration.
- If you select 9 (ALL) and specify Y for registration, the technique that achieves the best compression percentage is registered.
- To continue your input to the Trial utility, press the SCROLL DOWN function key (usually F8). If you do not want to continue, type CANCEL to end.
