This topic provides information about the terms used on the PATROL Consoles.

Application class

Application classes provide the knowledge that BMC PATROL for Web Services Monitoring uses to monitor resources. Application classes are delivered in the form of .km files, and they display in the PATROL consoles as icons.

Applications and container icons are often nested within other application instances. For information about how to access application classes, see Accessing menu commands and Infoboxes.

All application instances for a particular application class are represented by the same icon throughout the BMC PATROL for Web Services Monitoring hierarchy. Each instance, however, can be labeled with a unique user-defined name.

Parameter

A parameter is the monitoring component of PATROL; run by the PATROL Agent. A parameter periodically uses data collection commands to obtain data on a system resource and then parses, processes, and stores that data on the computer running the PATROL Agent. Parameter data values are collected, summarized, and stored on the PATROL managed system. The information is available for review by a PATROL console. The console may view parameter data as text, graph, gauge, stoplight, or Boolean (check mark or 'X') icons.

During the setup of BMC PATROL for Web Services Monitoring, some parameters are activated by default, while others are inactive by default. A parameter must be activated before it can begin executing. At any time, you can activate and deactivate a particular parameter for any number of instances, or you can resume and suspend all parameters for an instance.
