Preference settings - General category


The General category of preferences lets you establish the types of behavior described below.

The following preferences are standard for an Eclipse interface.

General settings

  • Run the system in the background
  • Keep next and previous editors, views, and perspectives open
  • Display the heap status in the status bar
  • Double- or single-click to open items

Appearance - general

  • Current presentation: BMC Presentation, Classic Presentation, or Default
  • Override presentation settings
    • Editor tab positions — Top
    • View tab positions — Top
    • Perspectives switcher positions — Top Left
    • Show text on the perspective title bar
  • Current theme: Default, Reduced Palette, Classic
  • Show traditional style tabs — enabled
  • Enable animations — enabled
  • Enable colored labels — enabled

Appearance - colors and fonts

  • Use filters to narrow selection lists. Use wildcards as place-holders in filters.
  • Set preferences for the appearance of dialog boxes, text comparisons, and other aspects of the interface

Appearance - label decorations

Show additional information about items using label decorations.

Compare/patch

General tab

  • Open compare automatically
  • Show compare in Outline view when possible
  • Show additional compare information in status line
  • Ignore white space when comparing two objects
  • Automatically save dirty editors before browsing patches
  • Specify the expressions that are used to identify lines that are added or removed from a patch
  • Specify the object types that you do not want to be compared with the same object types

Text Compare tab

  • Synchronize scrolling between both panes of the compare editors
  • Initially show the original version
  • Show pseudo conflicts
  • Connect ranges with one line
  • Highlight individual changes
    When reaching the end or beginning of an element:
  • Prompt to go to the beginning or the end
  • Loop back to the beginning or end
  • Go to the next or previous element
    Preview the results of your choices

Content types

Content types include:

  • Properties (Preferences)
  • Refactoring History Files
  • Refactory History Index
  • Runtime log files
  • XML (Ant Buildfiles)
    File associations — Displays the files associated with a specific content type. You can add new file associations and edit or remove existing associations.
    Default encoding — Sets default encoding for a content type, such as UTF-8.

Editors - general

  • Size of recently opened files list
  • Show multiple editor tabs in the content editor
  • Allow in-place system editors
  • Restore editor to its original state at system startup
  • Prompt to save on close, even if the editor is still open elsewhere
  • Close editors automatically, when xx number of editors are open
  • When editors are dirty or pinned:
    • Prompt to save and reuse
    • Open new editor

Editors - file associations

The File types box displays the files types and the Associated editors box displays the editor with which the types are associated. You can add new file types or editors, or edit or remove existing file types or associated editors.

  • Undo history size (default: 200 mb)
  • Displayed tab width: 4
  • Insert spaces for tabs
  • Highlight current line
  • Show print margin
  • Print margin column: 80
  • Show line numbers
  • Show range indicator
  • Show white space characters
  • Show affordance in hover on how to make it sticky
  • When mouse moves into hover:
    • Close hover
    • Enrich immediately
    • Enrich after delay

  • Warn before editing a derived file
  • Smart caret positioning at the line start and end
  • Appearance color options

Editors - text editors - accessibility

  • Use custom caret
    • Enable thick caret
  • Use characters to show changes in vertical ruler

Editors - text editors - annotations

Shows preference settings available by annotation type

Editors - text editors - hyperlinking

Shows preference settings for the type of hyperlinking navigation enabled and the default modifier key

Editors - text editors - linked mode

Shows preference settings for ranges by range type

Editors - text editors - quick diff

To show changes within the text editor instead of the compare editor, enable Quick Diff.

To quickly determine how many changes you have made to a file since your last commit, show differences in an overview ruler.

Editors - text editors - spelling

Add, edit, and remove key bindings for the system. For more information, see Customizing-keystroke-combinations.

Perspectives

Manage the behavior of perspectives, such as where a perspective opens and which perspective is the default.

Web Browser

Identify any associated web browsers.
