In the context of TrueSight Infrastructure Management, a service is a business service, or a technical service consisting of a group of applications, middleware, security, storage, networks and other supporting infrastructure that comes together to enable a comprehensive, end-to-end business process, transaction, or exchange of information. A service model is a generic term for a logical representation of the relationship between IT infrastructure components.
Service models can belong to several categories, such as network topology, data flow, dependency, and impact. In the context of TrueSight Infrastructure Management, a service model is typically an impact service model. An impact service model identifies which higher-level entities, such as applications, technical services, business services, and organizations are impacted, and how they are impacted. An impact service model also identifies when the lower-level IT infrastructure entities, such as servers, network devices, and application systems are impacted by some condition.
You can monitor the business services in the TrueSight console to assess service health.
To set up services in the TrueSight console
Business services monitored in TrueSight console are synchronized from the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server. Services can be created in TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server by using one of the following methods:
- Editing service models using BMC Atrium Explorer
- Building and publishing service models from BMC Atrium CMDB
- Creating basic service models from the administrator console
You can monitor the services and their associated service models created in the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server in the TrueSight console. There are two types of service models as explained in the following section:
- Discrete service model: A service model in which all the Configuration Items (CIs) are created on a single TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server is called a discrete service model. The number of CIs in a discrete model is limited to the maximum number of CIs supported by TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server.
Distributed service model: A service model that is distributed across two or more TrueSight Infrastructure Management Servers is called a distributed service model. When the number of CIs in a service model exceeds the maximum limit of CIs allowed in a single server, it is possible to distribute the model across multiple Infrastructure Management Servers.
To enable these services and their service models so that they can be monitored in TrueSight console, ensure that your TrueSight Infrastructure Management server is registered as a component with the TrueSight Presentation Server. For more information, see .
- To enable distributed service model so that it can be monitored in the TrueSight console, ensure that all the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Servers where the service model is distributed, are registered as components with the same BMC tenant in the TrueSight Presentation Server.
