Configuring Unix Processes

With Unix Processes as the monitor type selected, the Add Monitor Types dialog box allows you to add processes running on hosts (both, remote and local) to the list of monitored processes, and to specify process-monitoring options.  For more information, see Configuring-monitor-settings.

Field

Description

Host Name

  • When the process that you want to add to the list of monitored processes is running on the local computer (where PATROL Agent is running), do not change the default value, localhost.
  • When the process that you want to add to the list of monitored processes is running on the remote computer, type the hostname of the computer where the process is running.

Process Label

Type a name for the monitored process instance. You can specify a label of maximum 100 characters.

Process Name String

Type the command or unique command string for the process that is being monitored.

Minimum Count

Type or select the minimum number of process instances that may be running on the computer. An alarm will be raised if the number of processes is lower than this value.

Maximum Count

Type or select the maximum number of process instances that may be running on the computer. An alarm will be raised if the number of processes is greater than this value.

Acceptable process owner

Type the user names of all acceptable process owners. Separate multiple user names with spaces.

Use Process Owners for Filtering

Select the check box if you want to filter processes based on owners.

Must parent process ID be 1?

From the drop-down list, select one of the following options:

  • Yes - indicates that the parent process ID (PPID) for the process must be 1. (Processes with a PPID of 1 are owned by init, or the UNIX scheduler).
  • No – indicates that the parent process ID can be a number other than 1.

Alert Delay Count

Type a value to set the number of collection intervals that the host will defer an alert while it waits for the process count to be reestablished.
Delaying the initial alert allows the system to rectify a situation without generating an event to notify you that there is a problem.

Alert State

From the drop-down list, select a state change for the following parameters when the Action Deferral Count reaches zero and the process count across the range is out of range

  • Alarm
  • Warning
