Managing the monitoring solutions

Overview

Monitoring solutions are a pre-defined set of metrics that monitor the health and performance of a specific device or service. BMC monitoring solutions are composed of monitor types and attributes.

Monitor types are a logical grouping of individual applications and a way of classifying the data that is to be collected.

Attributes are the monitoring elements of a PATROL knowledge module. Attributes are run by the PATROL Agent, they periodically use data collection commands to obtain data on a system resource and then parse, process, and store the data on the computer that is running the PATROL Agent.  Attributes can display data in various formats, such as numeric, text, stoplight, and Boolean. Attributes have thresholds and can trigger warnings and alarms.

Installation components include monitoring solutions and PATROL Agents.

Working with the installation components

As an administrator, before you can monitor your environment, you need to import installation components that you deploy to PATROL Agents. For more information, see Creating deployable packages.

Example

To monitor the disk space and CPU usage on a Windows computer, you need the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers monitoring solution. This monitoring solution is a part of the PATROL base repository that you can download from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) facility. For more information, see Downloading the repository files.

The Installation Components tab on the Repository page lists the installation components that are available on the Presentation Server.

The following table lists the tasks you can perform from this tab:

NumberTaskAction

Search for a monitoring solutionClick theicon and enter the search text. Search is not case-sensitive and applies only to the monitoring solution name field.
Launch context-sensitive helpClick theicon to launch context-sensitive help.
Sort the displayClick the Name or No. of Packages Used In column header to sort by that column. Click again to reverse the sort order. By default, the display is sorted by the monitoring solution name.
View the deployable packages where a monitoring solution is usedThe Name of Packages Used column displays the deployable packages in which the monitoring solution is used. Hover over the text to view a comma separated list. You can also click the number that is displayed in the No. of Packages Used In column.
 Delete installation components

To delete a single installation component, select the installation component that you want to delete and choose Delete from the action menu next to the installation component name.

To delete multiple installation components, select the installation components that you want to delete and choose Delete from the action menu on the column header row.

If an installation component is used in any deployable package, the action menu for that installation component is disabled.

Note

When you try to delete an installation component that is being used in a policy, an error message is displayed and deletion fails.
