The BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics (IT Data Analytics) product enables you to collect and analyze a variety of log data (events) and troubleshoot problems quickly. It also helps you perform root cause analysis and event correlation. By integrating with this product, you can perform an in-depth analysis on events in BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management. By doing this, you can use the context available from BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management to perform a further analysis of events or monitor events over a period of time to find abnormalities suspected.

After the integration, IT Data Analytics:

  • Gets events from BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management
  • Gets metrics for events associated with the following event slots:
    • pn_object_id
    • pn_object_class_id
    • mc_parameter

This helps you easily cross-launch into IT Data Analytics for performing advanced analysis for an event.

This topic provides information about the following aspects:

Before you begin

Ensure that you configure the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Managment server in BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics. For more information, see Integrating with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management in the IT Data Analytics online documentation portal.

Cross-launching into IT Data Analytics

In the process of troubleshooting, if you want to investigate events appearing in BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management, then you can cross-launch into IT Data Analytics. This is also helpful if you want to perform advanced analysis using search commands available in IT Data Analytics. IT Data Analytics helps you isolate problems and perform root cause analysis for events quickly and efficiently.

To cross-launch into IT Data Analytics, proceed as follows:

  1. On the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Operations Console, click Event Collectors on the left navigation pane.
  2. On the right, click the event that you want to investigate.
  3. Click Tools Menu , select Launch into IT Data Analytics and then select the appropriate hostName. The hostName  is the host name of the BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics server that is registered with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management at the time when you configured the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management server.
  4. Provide the user credentials for logging on to IT Data Analytics.
You can see search results for the search query, HOST="hostName" for 45 minutes before and 15 minutes after the event time.
where, hostName refers to the host name associated with the event.

You can also cross-launch into IT Data Analytics for an event originally sent by using IT Data Analytics. To do this, navigate to the Details panel for an event under Event Collectors and then launch the IT Data Analytics Console by clicking the Show in ITDA URL available for Object URI.

Receiving events sent by IT Data Analytics

IT Data Analytics has the capability of sending events to BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management for abnormalities detected via scheduled notifications. This is an important feature with regard to investigating BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management events in IT Data Analytics. Supposing you want to further investigate or monitor an event. When you cross-launch the event into IT Data Analytics, you perform some ad-hoc searches to investigate the issue. After some analysis, you decide to monitor the event for a few days because you suspect an issue which is not to be seen immediately. For this, you create a notification in IT Data Analytics for the event with an appropriate condition, such that if the condition (or threshold) is breached, an event (with the severity specified) is sent by IT Data Analytics to BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management.

Note

To be able to successfully receive events sent by IT Data Analytics, ensure that the BAROC files are loaded on the cell on which the event must be sent.

To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. Navigate to %MCELL_HOME%\etc\hostName\kb\classes and append the BAROC file name, itda in the .load file. For more information, see Loading and compiling BAROC modifications.
  2. Navigate to %MCELL_HOME%\etc\hostName\kb\collectors and append the BAROC file name, itda_collectors in the .load file. For more information, see Creating or modifying a collector.
  3. Compile the cell and then re-load the Knowledge Base. For more information, see Compiling a Knowledge Base - mccomp.
