This topic briefly defines the concepts of systems, business drivers and entities in BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization.
An entity can be either a system or a business driver. Both are managed by BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization in the same way: They are well-known entities with which measurements and configuration data are associated.
Systems or business drivers can be generic or of a specific type. Types identify the kind of information associated with the entity and its role in the application. For example, a system could be a specific database instance or a network link, and not just a server. Types are used to distinguish among different kinds of systems.

Typical operations performed on systems and business drivers include the following tasks:
A system is a set of IT resources that includes hardware, software, middleware, utilities, applications, and operating systems. A system can refer to a physical computer, or a logical component on a computer. For example, a software resource such as a database can be considered a system.
A business driver represents the load processed by an application, and is a consequence of the application's business purpose. For example, a bank's website can be characterized by the number of pages accessed by the users and by the number of web banking transactions. Business drivers represent the users' behavior, and selecting the most appropriate business drivers is key to the capacity planning process. In comparison, systems represent the IT infrastructure's point of view, while business drivers represent the users' point of view.
In BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization 3.5 and earlier, business drivers were called workloads. References to workloads might still appear in BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization documentation.
