You can use the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Installer to upgrade from version 9.5.x or 10.0.x to 10.3.

If you are using version 4.5.x or 9.0.x, you must upgrade to version 9.5.x before upgrading to version 10.3.00.

If you are using version 4.0.x, you must first upgrade to version 4.5.x.

This topic provides additional recommendations for upgrade use cases:

The Repository folder contains deployment-specific historical data that must be preserved upon upgrade. All other deployment files can be regenerated by relaunching the installer. Restoring the database backup will suffice to restart the upgrade from scratch.

Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure that a valid database backup or perform a full database and filesystem level backup of the installation folder of all BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization servers (generate a tarball file or a snapshot of BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization VMs) and if required, restore the backup.

Refer to the following sections on upgrade considerations:

Connectors upgrade

Many ETL modules have been updated in 10.3 to fix defects and provide enhancements. If you have ETL instances already configured and running, they will continue to work with the updated module. You do not need to reconfigure.

However, in some specific cases, BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization 10.3 offers a better alternative to an existing connector, and in these cases, a reconfiguration is recommended. For additional information about these special cases, see Levels of support for specific BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization features and components.

ETL module

Filter options for white listing and black listing are now available.

BMC TrueSight Operations Management

For AIX systems, LPAR metrics will be imported even if HMC is not being monitored.

OpenStack API Extractor

The OpenStack ETL module is now configured as a service. Ceilometer support has been added, however you will need to configure the ETL module to collect Ceilometer data. For more information, see OpenStack Clouds - Support for Ceilometer.

BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management

ETL instances that were configured to collect data from BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 3.1 or earlier are not supported and will be converted to custom ETL instances. However, you can add and configure ETLs for collecting data from BMC Cloud LifeCycle Management 4.0, 4.1, and 4.5. For more information, see Levels of support for specific BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization features and components.

vCenter integrationThe vCenter and vSphere proxy collectors that were formerly provided by the Gateway Server (formerly a part of the Capacity Optimization standard edition or BMC Performance Assurance) are not available in this release. Therefore, the integrations to vCenter need to be reconfigured to use the vCenter extractor service.

Aging classes

Flexible data retention policies are offered as part of the aging class feature. After upgrading, all your metrics will be preserved and will continue to use the aging configuration that have been defined previously. The existing aging configuration levels are mapped to the Long aging class. For more information, see Aging Class mapping.

If you are upgrading in the silent mode, before you modify the aging configuration set the -J AGING_CONF_SELECTION=CUSTOM and then define the required setting for aging configuration to preserve your settings and data. For more details, see Sample configuration files for silent installations.

Customized metric filters for ETLs are also preserved and will continue to function as expected. However, it is recommended that you use the Metric Profile feature, which provides additional configuration options. For more information, see Metric profiles.

Atrium Single Sign-On

If you had configured BMC Atrium Single Sign-On, you must disable it before upgrading, and enable it after the upgrade is complete. For more information, see Configuring BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with BMC Atrium Single Sign-On.

If you do not disable BMC Atrium Single Sign-On before you upgrade, it will not work after the upgrade. Follow the steps given below to remove the Atrium Single Sign-On Agent entries:

Click here to view the procedure...

  1. Navigate to ${TSCO_HOME}/tools/AtriumSSO/backup directory and delete the following files:
    • server.xml.orig
    • web.xml.console.orig
    • web.xml.dash.orig
  2. Ensure that the atssoAgents directory is removed.
Navigate to ${TSCO_HOME}/web/tomcat to verify and remove the directory if it is present.
  3. Go to the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On console and click Agent Details to launch the Agent Manager, and delete the following entries for the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Console on which BMC Atrium Single Sign-On is enabled.
    • /console@${TSCO_Host}:8000
    • /dash@${TSCO_Host}:8000
    • /GeneralManager@${TSCO_Host}:8000
  4. Go to the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console and enable BMC Atrium Single Sign-On. For more information, see Enable integration with BMC Atrium SSO.

Out-of-the-box views upgrade

A new version of the out-of-the-box views is installed with BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization 10.3.

After the upgrade is complete, all out-of-the-box views need to be updated with the following procedure:

  1. Choose Administration > System > Maintenance.
  2. In the Additional Packages table, click to complete the installation.
If a view was not installed before the upgrade, it will not get be installed after the upgrade. To install the view, click INSTALL.

After the procedure is complete, these views appear under the Views tab, and are owned by the admin user. To grant access to other users, you must edit each view and associate it to one or more access groups.

BMC discourages keeping renamed versions of older views because they were extensively modified in version 10.3, and these renamed versions may not work properly. BMC strongly recommends that you install new versions of the same views, as described above.

Storage View

The Storage View is not available in this release. For more information, see Levels of support for specific BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization features and components.

If you had deployed Storage View in an earlier version, it will continue to be available in the same View group.

The Capacity Containers tab has been renamed to Reservations Targets.

Skin customizations

Any skin customizations that you have performed before the upgrade are preserved.

In version 10.3, the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization user interface displays the new BMC brand and look and feel. BMC recommends that you review any skin customizations  to ensure that they align with the new look of the console.
