BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization enables you to predict the behaviour of KPI values for your IT infrastructure by using external flows. You can import future values into Capacity Optimization, and also consider them during the creation of your capacity plan.

In BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization, estimated values (or future values) are referred to as Forecasted values, and are saved in the Capacity Optimziation database as custom statistics.

Custom statistics

Custom statistics (user-defined statistics over collected data) for hourly/daily/weekly/monthly resolution are available OOTB in BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization through the STAT_DEF table. This table contains custom statistics saved either by a Time Forecasting Model (TFM), or even import them through user-defined statistics.

The following table describes all available custom statistics in detail.

1 EST_W will be available as a new statistic in case of day resolution.
2 EST_M will be available as a new statistic in case of month resolution.

As elaborated in the preceding table, XST_H, XST_D, XST_W, and XST_M are new custom statistics that have been added to BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization 10.3 for performing predictions/forecasts. You can use these statistics to import forecasted values into Capacity Optimization.

Also, EST_W, EST_M, EST_H, and EST_D are statistics that are produced by the TFM itself, and you cannot use them to perform forecasts, or to import forecasted values into Capacity Optimization.

Custom predictions

Inputs for custom predictions come from external flows, such as financial documents, marketing strategies, and so on. Capacity Optimization can import such predictions (values) as is, irrespective of the format or method used to produce or estimate them.

Custom predictions can be collected by using a CSV File Parser that loads the following datasets:

  • WKLDAT: Vertical format – Business driver data.
  • SYSDAT: Vertical format – System data.

Using an OOTB ETL module to import custom statistics

As described in the preceding section, custom statistics are imported into BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization by using the SYSDAT and WKLDAT datasets that contain the STATNM column. STATNM represents the ID of the statistic.

For importing future values into BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization, STATNM first identifies the custom statistic by using the ID (if the value is numeric), and then the statistic name.

To import forecasted future values into BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization, use the Generic - CSV file parser ETL module. This ETL module is available OOTB, and shares its lookup with the ETL that created the business driver. For detailed information on how to use and configure the file parser, see Generic - CSV file parser.

The example below illustrates the typical structure of a CSV file used to import forecasted values.

Your CSV file does not necessarily require a Duration column, since the name of the custom statistic represents the resolution of samples. In the example above, the XST_D value represents Daily values. Similarly, XST_H will represent Hourly, and so on.
