Setting datastore overprovisioning definitions

As a BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Administrator, you can define datastore overprovisioning ratios at three different levels:

Ensure that, whenever Capacity-Aware Placement Advice uses overprovisioning, the provisioning of the VMs is also using the thin provisioning option. Otherwise Capacity-Aware Placement Advice and the provisioning will not match. There are two aspects to this:

  1. For the primary disks, the VGP template should use thin provisioning as described in Creating a VGP in BMC Server Automation for a vCenter environment.
  2. For additional secondary disks, there is a specific "Access Attribute" flag in BBSA that must be used. If this flag is not set, secondary disks default to thick provisioned.

Setting global overprovisioning for all datastores

As a BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Administrator, you can specify global overprovisioning for all datastores in your infrastructure. This functionality is provided by the BMC - Cloud Lifecycle Management - Placement Advice Preparation system task. This system task contains global settings as resources thresholds and other default utilization for the Capacity-Aware Placement Advice (CAPA) service.

The setting used to configure global overprovisioning for all datastores is called Datastore provisioning ratio, and has values that can range from 100% (Default, no provisioning) to 400% (Provisioning four times as much space as the available space).

To set global overprovisioning for all datastores, perform the following task:

  1. Navigate to Administration > Scheduler > System Tasks, and from the System Tasks table select BMC - Cloud Lifecycle Management - Placement Advice Preparation.
  2. In the BMC - Cloud Lifecycle Management - Placement Advice Preparation task details page, click Edit this run configuration in the Run configurations table.

  3. Under Edit run configuration Default, select the Placement advice configuration tab and enter a percentage value for the following property:
    • Datastore provisioning ratio: Enter a value between 100% – 400%.
  4. Click Save.

Setting datastore overprovisioning at the datastore pool level

Follow the steps given below to override the global overprovisioning setting for a specific datastore pool:

  1. In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization Console, select Workspace > Cloud Infrastructure > Systems. Navigate the hierarchy to the datastore pool level, and click on the specific datastore pool for which you want to override the global datastore overprovisioning setting. The following image shows an example of a Datastore in the Workspace hierarchy.
  2. Under DATASTORE in the Summary tab of the datastore pool details page displayed on the right, click to edit, and enter a new overprovisioning value for VM disks thin provisioned policy (100% is default). The following image shows an illustration.
  3. Click  to save the modified overprovisioning value. Click to discard the changes. The following image shows an illustration.

Setting datastore overprovisioning at the datastore level

The following task explains how you can override the global overprovisioning setting for a specific datastore:

  1. Navigate to Workspace > Cloud Infrastructure > Systems. Navigate the hierarchy to the datastore level, and click on the specific datastore for which you want to override the global datastore overprovisioning setting.
  2. Under DATASTORE in the Summary tab of the datastore details page displayed on the right, click to edit and enter a new overprovisioning value for VM disks thin provisioned policy (100% is default). The following image shows an illustration.
  3. Click to save the modified overprovisioning value. Click to discard the changes. The following image shows an illustration.

Viewing return statuses of Capacity-Aware Placement Advice

The following overprovisioning return statuses are available under the Cloud Capacity Visibility > Placement Advice tab:

  • OK using overprovisioning: The placement was successfully done using datastore overprovisioning.
  • Insufficient Capacity with PPA and thick provisioning (BCO_PAS_ERR118): Insufficient Capacity based on PPA's using a thick provisioned disk.

To view these statuses in the Cloud Capacity Visibility view:

  1. Navigate to Views > Cloud > Cloud Capacity Visibility >Placement Advice.
  2. Click Last call details. In the table that is displayed, you can check the Status column for any ID that has returned an overprovisioning related status.
