This topic describes how you can perform a silent install of BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization on your machine. For more information, refer to the following sections:

Overview

A silent installation enables you to install the product on your machine in situations where the operating system does not provide a graphical user interface (UI) support. Run a silent installation if you want to:

  • Run the product installer in the background instead of running it interactively.
  • Install on a remote computer that cannot display a graphical UI.
  • Maintain consistent installation configuration values across multiple computers.

You can launch a silent install from the command line by using a preconfigured install configuration template file (config file) that contains details for all the parameters required to install the product. You can create a single config file and use it for multiple installations.

Sample config files that contain default parameters for installing the product in different configurations are included with the product install package, and you can modify them as per your installation requirement or scenario.

Before you begin

BMC recommends that you obtain the appropriate config files from the product install package, and complete all the steps mentioned in Planning and Setting up the installation environment before you proceed.

Installing the product in silent mode

To install BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization in silent mode, perform the following task:

  1. Unzip and extract the installation files: In the temporary directory that you created while Setting up the installation environment, unzip and extract the installation file by using the following commands.

    Unzip command with example

    Unzip:
    gunzip TSCO_AppServer_<ProdVer>_<OSver>_<Arch>.tar.gz

    Example:
    gunzip TSCO_AppServer_ver10.0.00_RHEL5_x86-64.tar.gz

    Extract command with example

    Extract:
    tar -xvf TSCO_AppServer_<ProdVer>_<OSver>_<Arch>.tar

    Example:
    tar -xvf TSCO_AppServer_ver10.0.00_RHEL5_x86-64.tar

Ensure that the directory permissions are preserved during extraction. This avoids any folder permission related errors when you are installing from a read-only location.

  2. Change the working directory: After extracting the installation files, change to the following directory, that contains all the sample config files included with the install package: ./BCO/Disk1/silentInstallTemplates.
  3. Copy the sample config file: Copy the appropriate sample config file to a folder of your choice: cp <config file name> /<target directory>

BMC recommends you to add custom values to a copy of, and not to the original config file that came with the install package.

  4. Edit the config file: Open the config file for editing in a text editor, enter your own values against default installation parameters and options that you would like to customize, and save the file.

  5. Launch the silent install: Change the working directory back to /BCO/Disk1 and type the following command to launch the silent installer using a config file and install the product on your machine:

    ./setup.sh -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE=<file path>/<config file name>.txt

where <config file name> can be one of the following silent install config files:

    Scenario 1: Typical installation

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
BCO_FIRST_SERVER_TYPICAL.txtTypical install on the First Server: Install the Application Server + ETL Engine – All components

Scenario 2: Scenario 1 + Installing components across multiple machines

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
BCO_FIRST_SERVER_CUSTOM_AS_FRONTEND_WEB.txtCustom install of the First Application Server.
BCO_ADDITIONAL_SERVER_AS_BACKEND_DH_PS.txtInstall the Additional Server: Install the Data Hub + Primary Scheduler + ETL Engine.
(Valid only if the First Server is installed using Configuration 2)

Scenario 3: Scenario 1 + Install BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with an additional ETL server

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
BCO_ADDITIONAL_SERVER_EE.txtInstall an Additional ETL Engine Server over a LAN connection. (Direct connection deployment)

Scenario 4: Scenario 1 + Install BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with an additional remote ETL server

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
BCO_ADDITIONAL_SERVER_REMOTE_EE.txtInstall an Additional (Remote) ETL Engine Server over a WAN connection. (Remote connection deployment)

Scenario 5: Scenario 1 + Install BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with an additional primary scheduler that can be used to run reports

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
BCO_ADDITIONAL_SERVER_AS_PS.txtInstall the Primary Scheduler on the Additional Server.

Scenario 6: Scenario 1 + Install BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with an additional web server

    Configuration fileConfiguration/Installation type
    BCO_ADDITIONAL_SERVER_AS_WEB.txtInstall the Additional Web Server.
  6. If the silent install completed successfully, the silent installer will exit with no notifications, and the shell prompt will display the blinking cursor.

If the installer encounters any issues with config file parameters during installation, it will exit midway and return appropriate error codes. You can also check the log file for details.
