About Service Pack 2

This service pack includes full installers for all components. You can download the service pack files from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website. The version number shown on EPD is 8.2.02.

Note

The installers for BMC Server Automation Compliance Content, BMC Vendor Patch Management and BMC BladeLogic Atrium Integration were not upgraded for version 8.2 SP2.

If you have installed version 8.2 SP1 for any of these programs, you need not upgrade to Service Pack 2 (8.2.02) to obtain those programs.
To upgrade to version 8.2 SP1 of these programs, download them from the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Suite 8.2.02 item on the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website.

Considerations for patch management

If you are using Microsoft Windows, review the following considerations for patch management.

Warning

Upgrading to 8.2 SP2 from version 8.1 SP5 is not a supported upgrade path.

Resolving a potential RSCD Agent installation problem

On version 8.2, if the target system is in a pending reboot state (for example, from a previous patch or other software installation), then the default MSI installer supplied with the agent disallows the installation.

In 8.2 SP2, the PENDINGREBOOTFORCE flag allows the MSI installer to ignore this state. After confirming that the pending reboot state on the target is not a result of a previous RSCD installation, setting PENDINGREBOOTFORCE=1 ignores the pending reboot state and proceeds with the installation. The following is a sample command line for the MSI installer:

msiexec /I RSCD82-SP2.WIN32.msi /qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress PENDINGREBOOTFORCE=1

Downloading the files

To download files:

Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.
Note

On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.
Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
At the login prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose, and select the Licensed Products tab.
Depending on your product license, expand the relevant BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Suite or Module node to show the listed versions.
Expand the relevant version node:
- For the base version, expand the 8.2.00 node.
- For a service pack, expand the relevant 8.2.0x version node.
Under the suite node, expand the BMC Server Automation node for the selected version.
Expand the entry for the relevant platform and language to show its downloadable files.
Select the files you want to download. See Installation programs for BMC Server Automation.
Click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
- Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an e-mail message.
- Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively, and to resume an interrupted download if the connection drops. This method requires a one-time installation of the AkamiNetSession Client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum is used to verify file integrity automatically.

Upgrading from version 8.2 SP1	Complete the following tasks: Upgrade the Application Server to version 8.2 SP2. Run the 8.2 SP2 SQL scripts provided in the 82-SP2-SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file (not the 8.2 SP2 external files). This file is available in the BMC Server Automation 8.2.02 section of EPD. Run these scripts as the BMC Server Automation database owner (as provided to blasadmin), according to the instructions provided for your database type in the readme file in the .zip. This step upgrades the database to a state that is compatible with the 8.2 SP2 Application Server.
Upgrading from version 8.2	Complete the following tasks: Upgrade the Application Server to version 8.2 SP2. Run the Data Migration Manager using the 8.2.02 external files to upgrade the database to 8.2 SP1. Upgrading from version 8.0 GA – version 8.0 SP11	Complete the following tasks: Upgrade the Application Server to version 8.2 SP2. Run the Data Migration Manager using the 8.2.02 external files to upgrade the database to 8.2 SP1. Run the 8.2 SP2 SQL scripts provided in the 82-SP2-SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file (not the 8.2 SP2 external files). This file is available in the BMC Server Automation 8.2.02 section of EPD. Run these scripts as the BMC Server Automation database owner (as provided to blasadmin), according to the instructions provided for your database type in the readme file in the .zip. This step upgrades the database to a state that is compatible with the 8.2 SP2 Application Server.
Upgrading from version 7.6	Complete the following tasks: Upgrade the Application Server to version 8.2 SP2. Run the Data Migration Manager using the 8.2.02 external files to upgrade the database to 8.2 SP1. Run the 8.2 SP2 SQL scripts provided in the 82-SP2-SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file (not the 8.2 SP2 external files). This file is available in the BMC Server Automation 8.2.02 section of EPD. This step upgrades the database to a state that is compatible with the 8.2 SP2 Application Server. Migrate compliance rules and discovery signatures in the database.

Warning

Upgrading to 8.2 SP2 from version 8.1 SP5 is not a supported upgrade path.

Upgrade at least one Application Server.
Note

Do not restart the Application Server until you complete the database migration.

Additional upgrades that occur at this point depend on where the Application Server resides:
- On a Microsoft Windows computer, an upgrade of the Application Server also upgrades the Network Shell. See Upgrading the Application Server on Windows.
- On a Linux or UNIX computer, an upgrade of the Application Server also upgrades all components that were installed as part of the earlier installation of the Application Server. These components can include the Network Shell, the RSCD agent, and the PXE server. See Upgrading the Application Server on Linux and UNIX.
Upgrade at least one BMC Server Automation Console. See Upgrading the BMC Server Automation Console.
Migrate the BMC Server Automation database to the current release. See Migrating core BMC Server Automation data.
If upgrading to a service pack, run a series of SQL scripts (provided with the service pack files) that upgrade the database to the service pack level. See Supported upgrade paths.
If you are migrating from a pre-8.0 version of BMC Server Automation, migrate compliance rules and discovery signatures. See Migrating compliance rules and discovery signatures.
If the BMC Server Automation file server resides on a different computer from the Application Server, upgrade the RSCD agent on the computer on which file server resides. The file server and the database must be at the same version before you run BMC Server Automation.
Confirm that the file server agent is running.
Upgrade the BMC Server Automation provisioning system. See Upgrading the Provisioning System.
Upgrade the other BMC Server Automation Application Servers, consoles, and RSCD agents in your enterprise (including on any virtual servers). Also upgrade any distributed custom configuration objects.

Run database migration

After upgrading the application server, you must upgrade the database through the Data Migration Manager. This will upgrade the database to 8.2 SP1.

Note

The database migration task is required only if you are upgrading from a pre-8.2 SP1 version.
If you are upgrading from version 8.2 SP1 or later, database migration is not required.

You can migrate to BMC Server Automation version 8.2 SP2 only from version 7.6 and later versions. If you are running a version earlier than 7.6, you must first upgrade to version 7.6. See the BMC Server Automation Installation Guide for version 7.6 for information about upgrading earlier versions.

When you migrate from earlier product versions to the current product version, you must use BMC BladeLogic Data Migration Manager to perform the migration of core data from your Oracle or SQL Server database.

If you are using an Oracle database, you must first determine minimum disk space requirements for running BMC BladeLogic Data Migration Manager. See Determining sizing requirements for Oracle databases.
You can then proceed to Migrating your database by using BMC BladeLogic Data Migration Manager, whether you are using a SQL Server or Oracle database.

After completing the database migration, you must run the SQL scripts found in the 82-SP2-SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file, provided on the 8.2 SP2 EPD page. These scripts upgrade the database from 8.2 SP1 to 8.2 SP2. Run these scripts as the BMC Server Automation database owner (as provided to blasadmin).
