Portal Snapshots are saved by default in the Configurations folder in the Application Navigator. You can change the default folder in the Preferences dialog box, as described in Setting WebSphere Portal client directories and general preferences. The naming convention for a Portal Snapshot is serverProfileName_snapshot_timeStamp.wpss. A Configuration can use any name.

To open Portal Configurations, you can choose between the following editors:

  • Portal editor, which displays Portal Configuration contents by category on several tabs
  • XML editor, for a display of Configuration contents in Design view and Source view (on separate tabs)
  • Text editor, for a basic display of the XML source text for direct editing

Note

When you double-click a Configuration, it opens in the editor in which it was most recently viewed.

For additional information about preparing Portal Configurations for your installation operations, see Packaging a Portal Configuration and Tokenizing Configurations. See also Comparing Configurations.

To open a Portal Configuration in the Portal editor

Right-click the Portal Configuration (or Snapshot) in the Application Navigator, and select Open With > Portal Editor.

The Portal Configuration is presented in a tabbed pane in the main window. The various tabs in a Portal Configuration provide access to the different Portal Configuration settings. The first tab, Introduction, contains links to the other tabs: Contents, Themes, Skins, Web Applications, Roles, and Permissions. You can explore the various elements included in the Portal Configuration through these tabs. In some cases, you can remove objects from the Configuration or change attribute values. Values that are displayed in gray cannot be edited. Any changes that you make can be saved back to the Configuration.

The following table provides links to instructions for the tasks that you can perform on these tabs:
