Downloading and applying the BDSSA licensing hotfix
The following section describes the steps to download and apply the hotfix for existing BMC Decision Support for Server Automation (BDSSA) environments.
Downloading the files
Download the zip file corresponding to the version of BDSSA installed in your environment from the following FTP location and copy it to a temporary location on the BDSSA server.
Preparing for the hotfix
Perform the following steps before applying the hotfix:
- Take a full backup of the portal (BDSSA_PORTAL) database.
- Export and save the custom reports.
- Log on to BDSSA as a reports administrator (for example, a member of GlobalReportAdmins) and generate the Product Usage Report (Public Folders > Dashboard > Product Usage Report) which lists all the BDSSA licenses currently allocated in the environment.
- Review the report and identify users that will be granted a BDSSA license. The base BDSSA product includes the following licenses:

You may have purchased additional licenses in addition to the base license. These could include :
- BMC Decision Support Server Automation – Query license (Reports.QueryStudio)
- BMC Decision Support Server Automation – Reports Author license (Reports.Studio)
- BMC Decision Support Server Automation – Viewer license (Reports.Viewer)
To determine the number and type of licenses you have purchased, contact your BMC account manager or BMC Customer Support.
- For the users that will not be granted a license after applying the hotfix:
Disable any reports these users have scheduled by performing the following steps:
- Log on to BDSSA as an Administrator (for example, a member of the GlobalReportAdmins role)
- In the upper-right corner, click Launch, IBM Cognos Administration.
- On the Status tab, click Schedules.
- Disable the schedules for the reports that are set by these users.
If you want to retain a report saved in the private My Folders folder for these users, perform the following steps:
- Log on to BDSSA as the user that will not be granted a license.
- Create a new folder under the Public Folders tab.
- Move the reports you want to save from My Folders to the newly created folder in Public Folders.
Note
After the sync process described below has completed, the BLAdmin and RBACAdmin users are disabled in BDSSA. They can no longer be used to log on to BDSSA and cannot have a license assigned.
If there are reports in My Folders for BLAdmin or RBACAdmin that you need to preserve or scheduled reports that should be disabled, follow the above procedures.
Applying the hotfix
Step 1: Extract and execute the hotfix installer NSH script
Perform the following steps on the BDSSA server:
Extract the BDSSA<version>_LICENSE_HOTFIX.zip file to a temporary location (for example, /tmp on Linux or C:\temp on Windows).
Open a command prompt or shell and navigate to the extracted directory. For example:
Windows C:\temp\BDSSA<version>_LICENSE_HOTFIX Linux /tmp/BDSSA<version>_LICENSE_HOTFIX Execute the bdssaHotfixInstaller.nsh script using the following command:
Windows (Command Prompt window as Administrator) nsh bdssaHotfixInstaller_windows.nsh
Linux (Shell terminal as root) nsh bdssaHotfixInstaller_linux.nsh
The script will prompt you to stop and restart the BDSSA services, press Y to accept.
The script will prompt you for a backup location, to use the default, press Y to continue.
The script may take 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on the number of users present in BDSSA.
The hotfix installer generates a file named cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv that contains a list of all BDSSA users and their current reporting capabilities in the following location:
Windows %BDS_HOME%\shared\ConfigurationManagement
Linux $BDS_HOME/shared/ConfigurationManagement
This file will be used as a reference in a later step to assign licenses to named BDSSA users. For example, see a sample cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv file:

After running the hotfix installer no user will be able to login to BDSSA until you create the sync file and run the manage_cognos_capabilities utility as described below.
Step 2: Create the sync file and execute the manage_cognos_capabilities utility
Create a sync file
Installing the BDSSA license hotfix generates the cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv file at the following location:

Create a new file named cognos_reference_license_sync.csv in the same location as the cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv file. The new file should have the same format as the cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv file but should only contain the list of users that will be granted licenses. For example:
- Ensure that the Username, Site Name, and Authorization are correct in the cognos_reference_license_sync.csv file. You can refer to the cognos_reference_license_fetch.csv file for syntax.
- Ensure that the reporting capability listed for each user in the cognos_reference_license_sync.csv file match what is assigned by RBAC in TrueSight Server Automation.
- Ensure that you have added only those users and capabilities to the cognos_reference_license_sync.csv file for whom you have licenses.
- Do not include the BLAdmin or RBACAdmin users in this file as you cannot assign licenses to those users.
Execute the utility
Locate the manage_cognos_capabilities utility at the following location:
Windows %BDS_HOME%\shared\odi\bin
Linux $BDS_HOME/shared/odi/bin
Execute the manage_cognos_capabilities.nsh script using the following command:
Windows (Command Prompt window as Administrator) nsh manage_cognos_capabilities.nsh -s
Linux (Shell terminal as root) nsh manage_cognos_capabilities.nsh -s
Log on to BDSSA using any of the user accounts that are present in the cognos_reference_license_sync.csv file.
Note
If the BDSSA environment is later upgraded after the licensing hotfix has been applied, the corresponding licensing hotfix for the new version of BDSSA but be installed. For example, if you have applied the BDSSA<version>_LICENSE_HOTFIX.zip hotfix to BDSSA 8.8 or 8.7, and then you upgrade to BDSSA 8.9, you need to apply the version of the hotfix applicable to the BDSSA 8.9.
