AIX Metrics for BMC Performance Perceiver

This section describes enhancements related to AIX Metrics for BMC Performance Perceiver.

IBM PowerVM view has been enhanced to display metrics for unassigned cores per AIX frame

The IBM PowerVM Host Summary view in BMC Performance Perceiver has been updated with a new view, Frame Allocation overview, which displays metrics that ascertain the number of unassigned cores in and the memory allocated to AIX LPARs.

For more information, see Frame Allocation Overview.

CPU_UTIL is now reported as CPU_USED to prevent over-estimation

Analyze for BMC Performance Assurance has been modified to use and report CPU_UTILIZATION from the Pool_Statistics and Processor_Pool_Statistics UDR metric groups as the primary source for the Pool CPU Usage metric. These two UDR groups were added in BMC Performance Assurance Agent 7.5.10, but were turned OFF. They have been turned ON by default in version 9.0 and later. These groups can be collected only if the partition has been configured to connect to the IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC).

For more information, see:

Per processor metrics are now reported for IBM PowerVM in Perceiver

Per processor metrics are now reported in BMC Performance Perceiver. The addition of these metrics enables you to view AIX Frame and LPAR CPU Consumption both by percentage and count.

For more information, see Frame Allocation Overview.

Fibre Channel metrics have been added

Two new metric groups have been added for NPIV Data Collection in AIX – Fibre Channel Configuration and Fibre Channel StatisticsThese groups are available only on AIX 6.1 TL8/AIX 7.1 TL2 or higher, and for any partition, including VIO Servers.

For more information, see:

This enhancement also affects BMC Capacity Optimization. For more information, see BMC Capacity Optimization 9.5.01: Support for NPIV has been added.

Available Memory metric is reported for AIX SPLPARs

When the svmon -G -O unit=KB command was run, not all AIX systems could report the Available Memory metric. With this enhancement, the Available_Mem metric has been added to the CAXVMD table for all AIX SPLPARs, and is mapped as MEM_AVAILABLE in BMC Capacity Optimization. It is available for AIX 7.1, AIX 6.1 (TL2 or higher) and AIX 5.3 (TL9 or higher) systems.

For more information, see Available metrics of IBM PowerVM systems.

This enhancement also affects BMC Capacity Optimization. For more information, see BMC Capacity Optimization 9.5.01: Available Memory chart is displayed for AIX SPLPARs.

Support for AIX Power VM feature Processor Folding

Processor Folding causes the hypervisor to reduce the number of virtual processors based on the load on the system. This improves the efficiency of the system by reducing the overhead of running additional processors, and avoiding unnecessary context switches.

The new metric Active Virtual Processors reports the number of available virtual processor for an SPLPAR during the measurement interval.

Note: The number of configured virtual processors are also reported to the CDB, and has been available in previous releases.

For more information, see https://kb.bmc.com/infocenter/index?page=content&id=KA400369

BMC Performance Perceiver

This section describes general enhancements related to BMC Performance Perceiver.

File System Statistic metrics have been added to Perceiver views

A new view, File System I/O, has been added to BMC Performance Perceiver under the Server Profile by Resource view category that displays file system statistic metrics.

For more information, see File System I/O view.

This enhancement also affects BMC Capacity Optimization. For more information, see BMC Capacity Optimization 9.5.01: File System Statistic metrics have been added.

Memory Profile view for a VM has been enhanced

The dTot_swap field in the CAXNODED table now returns the expected value for Virtual Server memory, and this enables the Virtual memory configured graph to plot more accurately under the Memory Profile view for a virtual machine in BMC Performance Perceiver. This issue was occurring because the CAXNODED.dTot_swap field was not being reported for the Windows Server platform in Perceiver at all.

For more information, see Memory Profile view for a virtual machine.

Disk performance metrics have been added to the Visualizer DB

The following disk performance metrics have been added to the CAXDISKD table in the Visualizer database:

  • Disk Reads: An average of disk reads from the disk device during the said interval, measured in Megabytes per second.
  • Disk Writes: An average of disk writes to the disk device during the said interval, measured in Megabytes per second.

These metrics determine the average block size of read and write operations, and the actual read and write operations occurring from and to the disk device, measured in Megabytes per second.

Script file used to automate General Manager execution has been added

A script file that automates the execution of General Manager scripts by using the pcron utility has been added to General Manager Lite.

For more information, see Knowledge Article KA366377.

IBM PowerVM Host Summary view has been updated with a new view

The IBM PowerVM Host Summary view in BMC Performance Perceiver has been updated with a new view, Frame Allocation overview, which displays metrics that ascertain the number of unassigned cores in, and the memory allocated to AIX LPARs.

For more information, see IBM PowerVM view categories: IBM PowerVM Host Summary

Investigate

This section describes enhancements related to the BMC Performance Assurance Investigate feature.

Metric groups for Linux CSETs are now collected in Investigate

CSET Statistics and CSET Configuration metric groups for Linux are now collected in Investigate for BMC Performance Assurance. CSET (CPU Set) analysis enables you to monitor specific CPU utilization by groups. In environments with demanding latency and throughput requirements, CSETs assist in tweaking core servers for maximum performance.

For more information, see CPUset Statistics and Configuration metrics.

File System Statistic metrics have been added

File System Statistic metrics have been added to I/O activity metric groups for various platforms in BMC Performance Assurance, such as, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Linux.

For more information, see:

This enhancement also affects BMC Capacity Optimization. For more information, see BMC Capacity Optimization 9.5.01: File System Statistic metrics have been added.

BMC Performance Assurance Console

This section describes general enhancements related to BMC Performance Assurance Console.

SEA metrics are collected from AIX SPLPAR machines

The Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) allows LPARs to connect to external physical ethernet switches, thus allowing broadcast and multicast protocols. For example, ARP, DHCP, BOOTP. VLANs can be bridged directly with the physical network VLANs. The SEA metrics from AIX SPLPAR machine are collected using two metric groups,

For information on the metric groups that have been added, see:

This enhancement also affects BMC Capacity Optimization. For more information, see BMC Capacity Optimization 9.5.01: SEA metrics are collected from AIX SPLPAR machines.

Metrics added to Perceiver for displaying the frame percentage allocation to AIX LPAR

BMC Performance Perceiver now displays CPU consumption metrics for AIX Frames and LPARs (System, User, IO wait, and idle).

For more information, see PowerVM Host view.

Administration

This section describes enhancements related to Administration.

Parameter case-sensitivity in the silent install file has been modified

The PERFORM_CONFIGURE_SERVICE_STANDALONE parameter specified in the AgentSilentInstallOptions.txt file that is used for installing the BMC Performance Assurance Agent in silent mode, has been modified to accept values that are case-insensitive.
