Features of Adaptive Server Enterprise KM

The ASE KM component of BMC ProactiveNet Sybase Database Monitoring contains the knowledge that BMC ProactiveNet uses to monitor, analyze, and manage the activities of Sybase ASE. The ASE KM provides a convenient and logical user interface that you can use to monitor the performance of Sybase ASE.

The ASE KM uses the SQL Snapshot application to retrieve and report information.

SQL Snapshot reads shared memory and retrieves the last SQL statement that a client process sends to an Adaptive Server. This feature enables you to examine the SQL statements that a problem process is currently executing. Using the ASE KM, you can:

  • monitor CPU performance, space metrics, database information, database object and segment information, process information, and device information
  • use sp_sysmon to retrieve a wide range of Adaptive Server performance and tuning information, and to display that information in an easily understood format
  • perform common database administrator functions such as starting and stopping Adaptive Server and adding a user
  • monitor the up and down status of the Adaptive Server
  • monitor the Adaptive Server error log
  • display the last SQL statement sent by a client process by using SQL Snapshot
  • send parameter warning and alarm data PATROL Event Manager (PEM), where the data becomes the events that are then managed by PEM
  • set certain periods of time when parameters do not go into a warning or an alarm state even if their values cross the alarm thresholds (blackout period)
  • display predefined parameter charts that measure key server resources
  • monitor Adaptive Server on computers not running a PATROL Agent (however, some monitoring features are unavailable when you use this method)
  • configure an HTML summary report of parameters to view in a web browser

Remote monitoring of an ASE

The ASE KM enables you to monitor a remote Adaptive Server (one that does not have a PATROL Agent installed and running on it). To monitor a remote Adaptive Server, the environment must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have an Adaptive Server installed locally on a UNIX® computer that is running a PATROL Agent (BMC ProactiveNet Sybase Database Monitoring cannot monitor a remote server from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows).
  • The computer running the PATROL Agent must list the remote Adaptive Server in its Sybase interfaces file.
