Enhancements

Service Pack 1 provides the following enhancements:

Support for password encryption

PATROL for Sybase now supports password encryption in Sybase ASE login.

By default, jConnect for JDBC sends plain text passwords over the network to Adaptive Server for authentication. However, jConnect also supports symmetrical and asymmetrical password encryption and can encrypt passwords before they are sent over the network.

For information about configuring the Sybase ASE, see Configuring in PATROL console or Configuring Sybase ASE using Central Monitoring Administration.

Support for monitoring Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) with SSL enabled

PATROL for Sybase can now monitor Sybase ASE with SSL enabled.

With the implementation of SSL, PATROL for Sybase provides several levels of security:

  • The Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise authenticates itself, which proves that it is the server you intended to connect. As a result, an encrypted SSL session begins before any data is transmitted.

  • Once the SSL session is established, the client requesting a connection can send his user name and password over the secure, encrypted connection.

  • A comparison of the digital signature on the server certificate can determine whether the data received by the client was modified before reaching the intended recipient.

For information about configuring the Sybase ASE with SSL enabled, see Configuring Sybase ASE Server in PATROL environment or Configuring Sybase ASE using Central Monitoring Administration.

Support to set the value of Long Running Trans parameter

From Central Monitoring Administration and using pconfig variable, you can set the value of Long Running Trans parameter to an interval of more than 600 seconds

Downloading the service pack

This section provides the information that you need to download and install the service pack from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website.

To download the installation utility and service pack from the EPD website

  1. Create a directory for the downloaded files.

    Note

On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.

  2. Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
  3. At the logon prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
  4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
  5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
  6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose.
  7. You can download the installation utility and the product service pack using either of the following methods:
Using Component View
  1. In the Filter Products field, type BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  2. Click Go.
  3. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  4. In the Version list, select 9.6.02, and click Go.
  5. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  6. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager.
    • Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an email message.
    • Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively and to resume an interrupted download.
This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
  7. Click   to close the window.
  8. In the Filter Products field, type BMC PATROL for Sybase.
  9. Click Go.
  10. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL for Sybase.
