This section describes how to set up simple discovery for an application class using the PATROL Developer Console for Windows and UNIX. 

Setting up simple discovery on Windows

In this task, you will set up simple discovery for an application class.

Before you begin

Before beginning this task, you should have created the application class and set its general properties.

To set the discovery type

  1. Choose the Properties command from the popup menu for the application class that you wish the PATROL Agent to detect. The Application Properties dialog box for the application class appears with the General property tab displayed as shown in the following figure.

  2. Click Simple to set the Discovery type to simple discovery. The Processes and Files property tabs appear on the Application Properties dialog box as shown in the following figure.

To set simple discovery rules

  1. Click the Process or Files tab to access a text box in which to type the appropriate simple discovery rules. You can use patterns to be matched. A text box appears, similar to the one shown in the following figure, for you to enter the criteria to be used in simple discovery.

  2. Edit the text box to provide the appropriate simple discovery rules. For more information, refer to Defining simple discovery rules.
  3. Click Apply to apply the changes to the dialog box; then click OK to close the dialog box.
  4. Choose File>Save KM from the PATROL Developer Console main menu to save the PATROL KM.
    The PATROL Console for Windows saves the local KM information in the local PATROL KM directory. By default, the local PATROL KM directory is the subdirectory of the local PATROL directory named %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\patrol\knowledge.
    You can use the PATROL Environmental Probe utility to view the settings of these environment variables on your machine.

Setting up simple discovery on UNIX

In this task, you will set up simple discovery for an application class.

Before you begin

Before beginning this task, you should have created the application class and set its general properties.

To set the discovery type

  1. Access the Application Definition dialog box for the appropriate application class. The Discovery properties options for the selected application class appear as shown in the following figure.

  2. Click Simple to set the Discovery Rules to simple discovery.
    The Monitored Processes and Monitored Files text fields appear on the Application Definition dialog box as shown. These text fields display the simple discovery rules for the selected application class.

To set simple discovery rules

  1. Click Add under the Monitored Processes or Monitored Files text fields to access the appropriate text box in which to type the simple discovery rules.
    If you are modifying an existing pattern, select the pattern and click Modify. The Edit Item dialog box appears for you to enter the criteria to be used in simple discovery.
  2. Edit the Item text box to define a simple discovery rule. For more information, refer to Defining simple discovery rules.
  3. Click OK to add the item or pattern to the Monitored Processes or the Monitored Files field and to close the dialog box. Repeat this procedure to add or modify patterns for all the monitored processes and files that will need to be discovered.
  4. Choose File > Save KM from the PATROL Developer Console main menu to save the KM.
    The PATROL Console saves the local KM information in the local KM directory named $HOME/patrol/knowledge.
