This topic contains information about the features in version 1.0.00 of the BMC PATROL for Hadoop product. BMC PATROL for Hadoop provides the ability to monitor your Hadoop environment along with all its components. The Hadoop environment includes DataNodes, NameNodes, Secondary NameNodes, JobTrackers, TaskTrackers, NodeManagers, JobHistory and ResoureManagers.

Features

BMC PATROL for Hadoop provides the following features for monitoring your environment.

Monitoring different Hadoop vendors

BMC PATROL for Hadoop allows you to monitor the following vendors of Hadoop. For configuring your Hadoop environment to monitor any of the following vendors, see Configuring after installation.

  • Apache Hadoop
  • Big Insite
  • Cloudera
  • Horton
  • Map R

Discover all the components in the Hadoop environment

After you configure a Hadoop environment for monitoring, BMC PATROL for Hadoop automatically discovers the following components of the environment:

  • DataNode
  • NameNode
  • JobTracker
  • SecondaryNameNode
  • TaskTracker
  • NodeManager
  • JobHistory
  • ResourceManager

Discovery depends on the selection of components for monitoring. For example, if ResourceManager is selected for monitoring, then only ResourceManager and NodeManager components will be available for monitoring.

Monitor DataNode

At the DataNode level, you can monitor all DataNode related activities like, DataNode filesystem state, remote procedure activities, Java Virtual Machine metrics, user group information metrics and other DataNode activities. For a complete list of all the DataNode metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor NameNode

At the NameNode level, you can monitor all the NameNode related activities like, identifying the NameNode filesystem state, Java Virtual Machine metrics, user group information metrics, statistics for NameNode startup, remote procedure activities and other NameNode activitiesFor a complete list of all the NameNode metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor JobTracker

At the JobTracker level, you can monitor all the JobTracker related activities like, remote procedure activities of the JobTracker, user group information metrics, Java Virtual Machine metrics, identifying the jobs in the default queue, startup time of the jobs and other JobTracker activities. For a complete list of all the JobTracker metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor SecondaryNameNode

If the primary NameNode fails or goes offline, an optional SecondaryNameNode that can be hosted on a separate machine. At this level you can monitor the Secondary NameNode Java Virtual Machine metrics, snapshot metrics, startup metrics and user group information metrics. For a complete list of all the SecondaryNameNode metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor TaskTracker

A TaskTracker accepts tasks from the JobTracker. At the TaskTracker level, you can monitor activities like, TaskTracker Java Virtual Machine metrics, remote procedure activities, startup metrics and user group information metrics. For a complete list of all the TaskTracker metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor NodeManager

NodeManager accepts instructions from the ResourceManager. Al the NodeManager level, you can monitor activities like, NodeManager Java Virtual Machine metrics, remote procedure activities, startup metrics, user group information metrics and snapshot metrics. For a complete list of all the NodeManager metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Monitor ResourceManager

At the ResourceManager level, you can monitor activities like, ResourceManager cluster metrics, Java Virtual Machine metrics, remote procedure activities, startup metrics, user group information metrics and snapshot metrics. For a complete list of all the ResourceManager metrics see, Monitor types (application classes).

Filter DataNodes, NodeManagers, JobTrackers and TaskTrackers

Create filters to include or exclude DataNodes, NodeManagers, JobTrackers and TaskTrackers from monitoring. For the available filtering options see, Configuring the Hadoop monitor type.

BMC TrueSight Central Monitoring Administration support

With version 1.0.00 of BMC PATROL for Hadoop and version 10.0.00 of Central Monitoring Administration, you can monitor the Hadoop monitoring profile. Monitoring profiles provide you the capability of monitoring various aspects of the Hadoop. You can directly apply the monitoring profile to enable default monitoring for the areas (monitor types) available under that profile. You can manually configure the Hadoop monitor type that is available for manual configuration.
