Recommendations for the vSphere View provides a set of recommended actions to help you resolve issues highlighted and identified by the Resource Monitor for your vSphere virtualization environment. It also provides actionable information on how to avoid potential capacity risks and improve overall efficiency.

As a Capacity Manager, Recommendations can provide you with “advice”: either a capacity risk requires an action and you can avoid it, or an efficiency opportunity requires an action for you to take advantage of it.

For more information, refer to following sections:

Using Recommendations to resolve capacity issues

Recommendations help you in answering critical questions related to your vSphere virtualization environment, such as the following:

  • Is there sufficient CPU, memory, and storage for clusters for the next 30 days?
  • Are there any oversubscribed clusters in the virtualized environment? If so, what action should be taken to offload some of these oversubscribed clusters?
  • Are there any idle VMs in the virtual infrastructure?
  • How much storage is consumed by old snapshots? Can some of these snapshots be deleted in order to retrieve storage?
  • Is there sufficient storage in datastores for the next 30 days? How can capacity problems in datastores be addressed?

Recommendation categories

Recommendations are classified in the following categories:

  • Risk: Risk-related recommendation results generated by TrueSight Capacity Optimization to reduce or eliminate capacity related risks. These results can be filtered further on the basis of the following severity levels: Critical, and Warning.
  • Efficiency: Efficiency-related recommendation results generated by TrueSight Capacity Optimization to improve resource utilization by eliminating wastage. These results can be filtered further on the basis of the following efficiency levels: Low, Medium, and High.

Resource monitor rules and Recommendations

A Resource Monitor rule is an event that is raised by the Resource Monitor, when a condition or set of conditions defined in a resource monitor rule is met. BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization generates recommended actions to suggest corrective actions on a defined alert raised by the Resource Monitor.

Recommendations are generated when a defined resource monitor rule is triggered, and that causes either a Warning or a Critical alert status to be generated. Risk Recommendations have the same recommendation status as their associated alert status, whereas Efficiency Recommendations do not have an associated recommendation status.

For more information on configuring Resource Monitor rules to generate Recommendations, see Adding a rule to provide vSphere recommendations.

Viewing Recommendations in your vSphere View

  • The Recommendations tab in the vSphere view lists risk- and efficiency-related recommendation results for all vSphere VMs. For more information, see VM Recommendations.
  • The Recommendations tab in the vSphere Infrastructure view lists risk- and efficiency-related recommendation results for all vSphere VMs, clusters, and datastores. For more information, see vSphere Recommendations.
