AIX Logical partitioning divides a computer's hardware resources into multiple environments (partitions) that can each run an independent and isolated OS. Partitions can communicate with each other as if they were separate computers. Resources assigned to a particular partition are dedicated to that partition only, and cannot be used for any other purpose. An LPAR must have at least one dedicated CPU, 1GB memory, and one I/O adapter. LPARs are static; to change the resources assigned to a running LPAR, the OS of that LPAR (and that of any other affected LPAR) must be rebooted.
AIX Workload partitioning uses software partitions created from, and sharing the resources of, a single instance of the AIX OS. Workload partitions are secure, isolated, virtual environments that appear to both users and applications, as dedicated AIX instances. WPAR is a purely software partitioning solution, as opposed to the physical resource partitioning of LPAR, DLPAR, and SPLPAR. WPARs can be created within LPARs. WPARs are flexible; resources are shared with the global AIX system in which they reside, and they are lightweight and quicker to install than LPARs.
Solaris Logical Domain (LDOM) virtualization enables you to allocate system resources, such as memory, CPU, storage or devices into logical groups to create multiple virtual machine instances. Each virtual machine has and can use its own operating system, its own resources and also be identified as a single stand-alone unit within the Solaris system domain.
