This topic lists the requirements for deploying the BMC BladeLogic Rapid Deployment Stack for Servers (BladeLogic RDS). This topic contains the following sections:

Before you begin

Perform the following tasks before you start the BladeLogic RDS deployment process:

  1. Obtain the relevant license and access credentials for the Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) download page.
  2. Download the md5sum file and the relevant BladeLogic RDS dump package for your database. This package installs a Linux guest operating system and the components listed in the BladeLogic RDS components and versions table.

Planning the BladeLogic RDS deployment

Before you install and deploy the BladeLogic RDS, ensure that the machine on which you install the BladeLogic RDS complies with the following requirements:

ItemPurposeDetails

Disk space for the BladeLogic RDS components, including
the BladeLogic Application Server and File server.

Sufficient disk space to provision the VM.

The BladeLogic RDS host is configured with a recommended default setting to manage 500 servers; therefore the vCenter should have at least 250 GB available for deployment.

BMC provides a pre-configured, thin-provisioned VM.

For more information about storage recommendations for BMC Server Automation, seSystem requirements.

VMware vCenter

A platform for creating virtual images and hosting the
BladeLogic RDS.

Used with BladeLogic Application Server.

VMware vCenter version 5.5 or later is required for installation.

Note: You need to know the vCenter access details before you start the deployment.

VMware ESX

Used with the vCenter as a hosting location for virtual machines

VMware ESX version 5.1 or later is required for this installation.

Ensure that you are able to log on to a VMware vSphere Connect and access the ESX server.

Oracle or SQL Server databaseUsed to store information

The following BladeLogic RDS deployment options are available:

  • SQL Server database dump
  • Oracle database dump, to be imported to a system with an Oracle database available on a physical computer
  • Oracle XE (11g Express Edition), installed as part of the BladeLogic RDS appliance download with pre-loaded database schema

For more information, see Database prerequisites and recommendations.

Database prerequisites and recommendations

Note the following database considerations prior to installing the BladeLogic RDS:

  • The BladeLogic RDS download package for Oracle includes both an Oracle XE database and the Oracle dump.
  • The Oracle XE database is configured to run automatically, without requiring you to perform a manual database import or reconfigure the application server.
  • If you plan to use an Oracle database on a separate machine in your system, import the Oracle dump to your Oracle server and configure the application server to point to the relevant database.
  • BladeLogic RDS for Servers with Oracle XE is generally not used in a production environment.

The following table lists the requirements and specifications for the database that works with BladeLogic RDSFor more information about the supported databases for BMC Server Automation, see Minimum software requirements.

RequirementDetails
HardwareDual or Quad 3 GHz Intel Xeon Processors (Dual-Core) or better
Operating systemAccording to the specification and requirements of the selected RDBMS

Database dumps

Ensure that you can import the database dumps from the directories on the BladeLogic RDS virtual machine to a physical computer in your environment.

BladeLogic Oracle database dump: bladelogic.dmp, available under directory
/usr/libexec/webmin/Downloads/dbdump/oracle

BladeLogic Portal Oracle database dump: portal_database.dmp, available under directory
/usr/libexec/webmin/Downloads/dbdump/oracle

SQL Server specific requirements

VersionSQL Server 2008 R2 or later
User account

Existing SQL server User on the target computer

Database dumps

Ensure that you can import the database dumps from the directories on the BladeLogic RDS virtual machine to a physical computer in your environment.

BladeLogic SQL Server database dump: BLADELOGIC.bak, available under directory
/usr/libexec/webmin/Downloads/dbdump/sql

BladeLogic Portal  SQL Server database dump: bladelogic_portal.bak, available under directory
/usr/libexec/webmin/Downloads/dbdump/sql

Performance benchmark recommendations

For optimum performance, BMC recommends that you deploy the BladeLogic RDS on a machine with:

  • 16 GB RAM
  • 8 CPU
  • Preconfigured default set of parameters for 50 work item threads (WIT), with thread parallelism set to 50
